The President of Panasonic, Kazuhiro Tsuga, currently still Teslas main battery supplier, recently gave some insights into the in-house production of the specially developed 4680 cells of the electric car manufacturer. According to the Japanese Manager, Teslas does not mean its own battery plans that the American electric car manufacturer becomes a direct competitor for Panasonic.

Tsuga has these and other statements in an interview with Newswitch.jp. In this, he has discussed various aspects of the future steps of Panasonic, starting from its own solar cell business to the in-house television division. He also lost a few words about the ongoing plans with Tesla. The Panasonic President realized that the development of the 4680 cells for Tesla is already in progress, although he said that there are still some challenges in terms of production increase due to the high capacity of the batteries. Nevertheless, Tsuga emphasized that Panasonic does not worry about that Tesla could become a competitor in the future.

“We have started developing a new battery cell, the 4680, for Tesla in the United States. The electrode structure is difficult because of the high capacity. We will produce prototypes in Japan and establish a manufacturing process. High reliability is one of our strengths. Panasonic is considered a long-standing partner of Tesla. The Japanese technology company was significantly involved in the construction and commissioning of the Gigafactory Nevada, a spacious plant in which the current 2170 cells of the electric car manufacturer are produced. While Tesla has now completed Battery delivery contracts with the South Korean company LG and the Chinese company Catl, Panasonic seems to be willing to continue its close relations with the electric car manufacturer.

This was last underlined by a form filed with the US Stock Exchange Supervisory Authority. This indicates that Tesla and Panasonic has completed a pricing agreement for the year 2021 for battery cells produced in Japan, which is to be used in Model S or Model X. Tesla has stopped the production of the flagship sedan and SUVs last month, which fears speculation that some updates are imminent for the two vehicles.

The 4680 cells of Tesla could mean the prize parity between electric cars and burns at the latest for the mid-decade. Thus, compared to the current cell type of Tesla, the 4680 cells should have 5-fold energy density and 6 times performance, half of the cost.

  3. The most important in the future is the battery price (number of charging cycles is now high enough), so that the electric cars do without subsidies and at the end of the decade are even cheaper than burner cars.
