Polestar 5 will apparently compete against the Porsche Taycan with a two-speed gearbox

After the Polestar 1 and 2, a Polestar 3, 4 and 5 will soon follow. The Swedes take no less than Porsche as their role model. Polestar is developing its own drives and batteries for this purpose. Polestar America boss Gregor Hembrough told Green Car Reports.

"Polestar wants to be a Porsche competitor in terms of design, performance and innovation," said Hembrough. This is how the Polestar 3 measure with the Cayenne (which is not yet available with an electric drive), the Polestar 4 with the Macan (soon also available as an electric car) and the Polestar 5 with the Taycan.

Apparently a new electric motor with the code name P10 is currently being developed for the Polestar 5. It should provide around 475 kW – mind you, a single motor, not the drive. With two such engines, almost 1,000 kW would be achieved, which means that such a car could also compete against the Tesla Model S Plaid or the Lucid Air.

The engine is combined with a two-speed gearbox – whether only on the rear axle as in the Taycan, or on both axles, remained open. In order to keep the losses small, the electric motors should also be able to be decoupled – here, too, it remained open whether only on one axle (as with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 & Co) or both.

Remarkably, the new engines will not be taken over by the group partners, so Hembrough: Neither Volvo nor Lotus will benefit from them, although they also belong to Geely.

But the group is also thinking about synergies. A new 800-volt system is being developed together with Volvo and Lotus. This is supposed to be a Charge the 103 kWh battery to 80 percent in 20 minutes or less. For comparison: Porsche specifies a charging time of 22.5 minutes for the Taycan (5 to 80 percent).

The 800 volt system is used in the Polestar 5. According to Hembrough, the Grand Tourer, which was recently teased for the first time, is based on a new platform that is not used by Volvo and Lotus. According to the Polestar manager, the Polestar 3, on the other hand, will be based on the SPA2 platform, which will also carry the Volvo XC90 successor.

If we have understood all of this correctly, the Polestar 5 in particular should be given an independent position within the group. Technically based on a new platform, with an 800-volt system, powerful electric motors and a two-speed gearbox, it could keep up with the Taycan.
