Pole As a stand-alone electrified high performance brand is launched and will be supported by Volvo Cars and Dessem parent company Geely Holding. Together, the Swedish premium manufacturers and Geely Holding bring around 640 million euros into the development of models, brand and production. Polestar presented his first production model in Shanghai today and given a view into the further future. On this series model we throw a look in this post.
The 640 million euro seed capital is used, among other things, for the construction of a state-of-the-art Polestar manufacturing facility in Chinese Chengdu. This clearly underscores the role of China as a global production center of Volvo Cars. Furthermore, both Volvo Cars and Polestar will benefit from synergies in technology development in the future, share purchasing costs and share economies of scale. With China as a driving force when electrifying the global automotive industry, you certainly have sought the right country to strengthen your own position in the race for supremacy in the electromobility market.
The Polestar 1, the company’s first production model, is a 441 kW (600 hp) strong plug-in hybrid coupe with two doors and four seats. So no pure electric car. Because it offers at least a purely electric range of up to 150 kilometers. If you compare this with other vehicles on the market, the Polestar 1 offers more electric range than any other hybrid vehicle. In production, the vehicle starts from mid-2019 in Chengd, later a smaller model called Polestar 2 follows.
Polestar Production Center Artist’s Impression
With the Polestar 1 you not only get the first production model of Polestar to face, but also the perfect example of the synergies between the brands Volvo and Polestar. This is based on around half of the vehicle technology on the Volvo specially developed scalable product architecture (SPA), while the other half of Polestar engineers within the Volvo Research and Development Department has been redesigned and tailor-made. Furthermore, the companies supported by Volvo Cars and Geely Holding are benefiting from the development of their own production plant in Chengdu from privileged access to the worldwide and proven manufacturing standards of Volvo.
A pure electric car should then follow between 2019 and 2021 with the Polestar 2. This is the first of a total of five electric vehicles of the Volvo and Polestar brands, which are introduced between 2019 and 2021. The Polestar models announced today are another proof of the Volvo Cars electrification strategy, which the company announced in July 2017. We remember.
From 2019 every newly introduced Volvo model will have an electric motor. Volvo sounds the farewell of vehicles equipped exclusively with an internal combustion engine and as the first established automotive company fully focuses on the electrification of the drive as the center of all future activities.
