Porsche boss Oliver flower gave recently to understand that the Boxster would certainly be suitable as an electric car. However, the demand depends on whether one will go the step towards fully electrification. A decision was now made. In fact, the purely electrical 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman for series production was released. From 2022 this should be built on the PPE platform.

Porsche argues that the body of a conventionally powered model is not suitable for an electric car, which must be designed from scratch specifically for a sports car with electric motors. In addition to the fully electric Cayman and Boxster you are planned before 2022 with mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the current vehicles.

“We now have prototypes of the 718, which run electric, and a hybrid prototype is being built. If you look at the next generation of these cars, it is possible, although it is not clear if it is plug-in hybrid or hybrid.”- Oliver flower, board leader Porsche

The decision to pursue both hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Boxster and the Cayman next to the upcoming electrical models has fallen after an internal technical study had revealed that lithium-ion battery technology has not yet advanced far enough to allow for purely electrical versions to offer more than 300 kilometers range without significant changes to the existing platform architecture of the mid-motor.

Porsche now pursues a plan that provides for purely electric Boxster and Cayman variants with the new PPE architecture of the company as well as updated versions of today’s models with hybrid and plug-in hybrid drives. A similar plan is currently pursuing with the successor of the Macan.

Porsche insiders cite studies of parent company Volkswagen, which expect rapid development of lithium-ion cells for improved energy-weight ratio in the next generation of batteries. It is estimated that the energy density of the cells will increase by 25% at both volumes and weight from 2019 to 2025.

By 2025, they also expect a further increase by 25% by using solid state batteries. This would allow Porsche to pack more energy in confined space without additional weight load. Which in turn could affect the electrification of the own portfolio.
