The entry-level model of the Porsche Taycan, the 4S, is supposed to cover 408 kilometers according to the WLTP standard (with the standard performance battery). Our colleagues from InsideEVs USA have now tested the real range of the Taycan 4S.

They drove it at 70 mph (about 110 km / h) on the American highway until it was empty. The video above shows the test.

For those who prefer to have it in writing and in German, here are the essential facts and findings from the clip:

A new Taycan 4S was tested with less than 1,000 miles on the odometer. The handicaps in the range test include the large 21-inch wheels that were mounted on the test car. Tester Kyle Conner also drives with the air conditioning switched on, which doesn't have to work too hard: Initially, the outside temperature is only slightly higher than the set temperature of 23 degrees Celsius, later it rises to 27 degrees.

Driving is in range mode, in which the greatest range is achieved. In this mode, the all-wheel-drive Taycan actually drives with front-wheel drive. In addition, in this mode the body is lowered in favor of aerodynamics.

At the beginning, the on-board computer reports a power consumption of 3.1 miles per kWh, which is the equivalent of around 20 kWh / 100 km. That is well below the standard consumption, which Porsche specifies as 26.2 kWh / 100 km. Interestingly, however, the power consumption display soon goes crazy and shows unrealistic values of 0.6 to 0.8 miles per kWh.

The test is run on a 54-mile (87-kilometer) stretch of highway – back and forth until the battery is empty. At the first turn, 83 percent remain. When a charge level (SoC) of 50 percent is reached, tester Kyle Conner has covered 146 miles (235 km): A 300-mile drive seems to him still imaginable.

When the Taycan gradually ran out of juice (2 percent remaining charge), the Taycan left the highway after 274 miles and continued to drive on smaller roads at a lower speed. Then the Taycan suddenly switches off completely: Despite the accelerator pedal being depressed, it no longer accelerates.

At this moment, a waiting car blocks the way to the nearby charging station. Kyle Conner switches the system off and starts again, as Taycan experts advised him. Then you can drive a short distance to park the car safely. With this emergency reserve, the Taycan finally reaches the pillar.

Result of the test: The Taycan 4S covered exactly 277.9 miles on one charge, i.e. 447.2 km. This means that the Porsche has left the US standards far behind: the US EPA classifies the Taycan 4S at around 200 miles (around 320 kilometers). The WLTP specification of 408 km was easily achieved in the test – despite the large wheels.
