The new LMDH prototype from Porsche will fight from the season 2023 at the world’s largest long-distance races in Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring for overall victories. The use in the FIA WEC Long-distance World Championship and the North American IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship takes place under the team name Porsche Penske Motorsport. Now the demanding test program is started to prepare for the race premiere in January 2023, as Porsche says.
This is done at the 24 hours of Daytona, the traditional prelude to the IMSA series. When choosing the internal combustion engine as a supplement to the uniform and regulations predetermined hybrid elements, Porsche sets a large-volume V8 engine with double turbocharging charging. The powerful engine is designed for operation with renewable fuels. They enable significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The system performance of the hybrid drive is around 500 kW in the race (680 hp).
“We had the potential choice of choice when choosing the engine for our LMDH prototype, because the product range offers several promising basic aggregates,” explains Thomas Laudenbach, Head of Porsche Motorsport. “We chose the V8-Biturbo, which from our point of view offers the best combination with regard to performance characteristics, weight and costs. The start into the active test program was an important step for the project.”

“The roll out of the LMDH race car was also the first route insert from Porsche Penske Motorsport. The team has worked well from the beginning. This proves the high professionalism of all participating areas. Because the necessary surgical requirements for the safe operation of a hybrid vehicle are very high “, supplement Urs Kuratle, overall project manager LMDH at Porsche Motorsport. “In the next operations, the required processes and procedures can be further deepened. During this first test days in Weissach, the V8-Biturbo has convinced us in all matters. We are sure to have decided exactly for the right aggregate.”
Engine rules leaves great freedoms
The engine rules for the LMDH vehicle class makes large freedoms in the areas of displacement, design and cylindrical number. The maximum speed is 10.000 revolutions per minute, the maximum passing noise 110 decibels. The engine must bring a minimum weight of 180 kilograms to the scales together with air supply and exhaust gas tract as well as the peripheral components for cooling. If used, this also includes the turbocharger including intercooling. The maximum performance lies according to the regulations in the range between 480 and 520 kW (653 to 707 hp). This bandwidth enables customizations under the Balance of Performance (BOP), which should provide a balanced overall performance in the field of LMDH racing cars.
The torque course is clearly defined. In racing operation, the peak performance of the combination of internal combustion engine and hybrid drive is 500 kW (680 hp) to the drive shafts. The unit components for the recuperation, storage and delivery of the electrical energy come from Williams Advanced Engineering (Battery), Bosch (Motor Generator Unit and Control Electronics) and XTrac (Transmission).
The LMDH cars start from 2023 a new top class in the FIA Long-distance World Cup (WEC) and the North American IMSA WeatherTech Sports-Car Championship. Both championships have a great importance for the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. Porsche has already explicitly welcomed the introduction of the new hybrid prototype class in the joint promulgation by the organizers ACO / WEC and IMSA.
“The new LMDH category allows us to fight for overall victories with a hybrid drive in the classics in Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring – and the costs to be reasonably. The project is highly attractive for Porsche. Long-distance motorsport belongs to the DNA of our brand.”- Oliver flower, CEO Porsche
For more than 20 years, it will be possible for the first time again to fight for overall victories with the worldwide long-distance races. The new LMDH category sets high cost efficiency. The cars are based on a further developed LMP2 chassis. The hybrid system including the control electronics is uniform. Chassis of four different manufacturers are available to choose from. The concept for the combustion drive and the design of the body can choose the brands freely under the regulations.

In May 2017, we were already able to catch a glimpse of how an electrified 911 could look like. This gave us at least the electrical Porsche 911s by…
This vehicle is significantly superfluous, even with electric car news.
Sorry Porsche, you have overrolled the shot of the world climate.
The bad thing, every TaryCan buyer supports these weak mators.
Considering that the Technical Urfater of Tacy the Porsche was 919 Hybrid, one must acknowledge that this technique was valuable for a few years. The Toyota hybrids were certainly more valuable for the environment ten years ago than they are today. Because they have at a time when Euro 5 Bolides have only made the dirt so out, significantly less pollutant entry realized.
The time will go fast, still 3-4 years, then 70% of the Porsche fleet are electrified and, above all, there is no combustion from the competition. Then it says: change! You do not dare to tell the clientele, but the 911 shares the platform with the 718 traditionally. And he becomes electric, so also the 911. The double-chinny gray-haired lamartina carrier under the Porschefahrers must then drive electrically. Perhaps a banner ban is previously adopted in Sylt, then get past the past.

Well, on I can rent Sylt already clean electric today
