D.he works data on the fuel consumption of cars are often pure theory. Anyone looking for a particularly economical vehicle must therefore compare practical consumption. The magazine "Car picture" has put together the most frugal cars in six price ranges.

If you have a maximum of 10,000 euros available, the Suzuki Alto 1.0 is the most economical. In practice, the small car requires 4.7 liters of super. Peugeot 107 (4.8 liters) and Citroen C1 1.0 (5.0 liters) are also waiting with a little thirst.

The Daihatsu Cuore won the small car category

In the class up to 15,000 euros, the Daihatsu Cuore small car comes in first with 4.8 liters of Super, followed by Fiat 500 0.9 (5.0 liters) and VW Up (5.1 liters).

If 5,000 euros more are in the budget, there is the small diesel car Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDi Econetic with a consumption of 4.3 liters, the diesel VW Polo 1.6 TDI Bluemotion Technology (4.5 liters) and Fiat 500C 1.3 Multijet Start are a bit more thirsty&Stop (4.6 liters).

If you can spend 25,000 euros, the best way to save is with the mini diesel car Cooper D (4.5 liters). VW Golf Bluemotion (4.5 liters) and VW Jetta 1.6 TDI Bluemotion Technology (4.5 liters) are on the same level in the diesel comparison.

Toyota Prius ahead of the 30,000 euro cars

For the 30,000 euro models, the Toyota Prius, a petrol hybrid, guarantees the lowest fuel costs (4.6 liters). Two diesels follow with the VW Passat 1.6 TDI Bluemotion (5.3 liters) and VW Golf 2.0 TDI (5.4 liters).

Pure diesel territory is the class up to 35,000 euros. There the Mercedes C180 CDI Blue Efficiency is ahead with 5.5 liters, followed by the VW Sharan 2.0 TDI Bluemotion Technology (5.9 liters) and the BMW X1 sDrive 20d (6.1 liters).
