VW wants to stir up the car market with a low-budget brand. But there won’t be any cheap cars in Germany. Anyway, nobody can undercut the junk goods from China and India in terms of price.

S.eleven for Skoda models, the VW Group does not come below the 10,000 euro mark for a car. As is well known, the Wolfsburg-based company is planning a cheap offshoot that should do it easily. A sedan costing around 6,000 euros, a station wagon for 7,000 euros and a van for 8,000 euros are planned. The low prices should be made possible by resorting to the discarded and long-written-off platform technology.

Competition to the Dacia

German customers are likely to wait in vain for a cheap car from VW and an alternative to the Dacia. CEO Martin Winterkorn has now confirmed that VW is considering a low-budget model at a price between 6,000 and 8,000 euros. "That is a topic that we are currently dealing with." When asked whether such a car could also be offered in Europe, however, he replied: "Not at the moment."

Two weeks ago, considerations about a cheap brand had leaked. Renault has been successfully on the road with its daughter Dacia for a long time. In his own words, Winterkorn can well imagine that VW will also offer a full-fledged car from 4.20 to 4.30 meters in length for little money – but only in emerging countries such as India and China. "I don’t know yet whether we can do that."

Up as currently the cheapest VW

In Germany, the cheapest VW is currently the small car Up, which costs just under 10,000 euros in the basic version. The basic versions of the sister models Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii are available for less than 9,000 euros. "When we talk about a low-budget car, we mean vehicles that are larger but should still remain inexpensive," says Winterkorn. The VW boss left it open until when a decision could be made in favor of such a model. There are currently cars on the road in India and China that are even cheaper. However, the savings come at the expense of safety and comfort.
