In the Belgian Ghent, the production of the new Volvo C40 Recharge Pure Electric has begun. That’s out of a message. With the second fully electrically powered model, the Swedish premium car manufacturer continues its transformation to a fully electric company: from 2030 Volvo wants to sell only electric cars. As it is further, this is one of the most ambitious electrification strategies in the entire automotive industry. In addition, Volvo wants to be a climate neutral company until 2040.
According to Volvo, the plant in Ghent is one of the largest locations of the company and is an important pioneer for the electrification of the brand. Also, the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric – the fully electric variant of the award-winning compact SUV – runs from the band. In the course of the model introduction, Volvo increases the production capacity for electric vehicles in Ghent on 135.000 units per year; Even for 2022, the company expects that more than half of all vehicles produced at the site has a fully electric drive.
“The Volvo C40 Recharge stands for our future,” said Javier Varela, Senior Vice President, Industrial Operations and Quality at Volvo Cars. “Our work in Ghent will play an important role within our global production network in the coming years.”In addition to the C40 Recharge Volvo wants to introduce more fully electric models in the coming years. These are to put in 2025 50 percent of the global paragraph, before Volvo will then bring only electric vehicles on the market from 2030.
The Volvo C40 Recharge also marks a milestone in terms of the sales strategy: the model – like all electric vehicles from the brand in the future – is only available online in Germany and other markets. Customers can order the vehicle from home or on site at a Volvo partner of their choice. Included in the purchase price is a “Care” service package for three years, which includes a calculation insurance consisting of automotive liability and full insurance and the cost of regular service, maintenance and wear.
According to Volvo, the C40 Recharge connects the advantages of a SUV – including the many esteemed higher seating position – with a flatter and more elegant design. In addition, he is also the first completely leather-free model of the brand. On board is as in the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, which developed together with Google’s infotainment system based on the Android Automotive operating system and has applications such as Google Maps and Google Assistant and access to Google Playstore for more apps and services. An unlimited data volume is also included as the possibility of playing software updates “over the air” and thus without a workshop visit.
The propulsion take on two permanent magnet motors on the front and rear axles, which develop a system performance of 300 kW (408 hp) and 660 nm torque. The necessary energy supplies a 78 kWh battery after factory, which can be charged from ten to 80 percent in fast charging stations within 40 minutes. The expected range is around 420 kilometers (WLTP).
