With the adoption of the law, the Federal Cabinet reacts to the fact that the meanwhile multi-year funding programs to build a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is not sufficient to ensure the construction quickly, reliably, as needed, nationwide and consumer-friendly. It is planned that the federal government will select several operators, which then build and operate the charging columns on his behalf. The operators are legally obliged to build the charging pillars in well-defined regions, in a certain time frame and with appropriate standards.

For companies that have already been invested and involving charging points, it must be ensured that their existing business models can continue to exist in the market. Andreae also states that state commitment ends again as soon as electromobility has established itself in the market. “This exit scenario is missing. The target achievement itself is not defined in the law. The concept of area coverage is stretchable and gives no indication of when it is reached or in which regions these even has already been achieved, “the chairman of the BDEW main management continues.
