The world’s most famous action hero is promoting the new Range Rover Sport. Still, there is no doubt that this successful off-road vehicle is intended more as a road car.
James Bond, it actually was. On the eve of the New York Auto Show, actor Daniel Craig personally drove the new Range Rover Sport to its world premiere in an old post office not far from Madison Square Garden.
The British off-road vehicle manufacturer even had roads blocked for the 15 minutes of fame of its new car and the actor’s journey was embedded in an elaborately staged video.
Of course, the film didn’t show what you usually see in New York: traffic jams, stress and stop & go. But customers don’t seem to be deterred either from the horrendous parking fees (up to 30 dollars a day): "We sell more Range Rover Sport in New York City than in any other city in the world," says Land Rover boss John Edwards.
It’s against Porsche and BMW
The car has been around since 2005 and represents the slightly lowered and coupe-like variant of the Range Rover flagship. The car has sold 415,000 times so far, and the new model has what it takes to continue this success, as a day in the passenger seat next to Mike Cross revealed.
Land Rover’s chief test driver has two fingers to control over two tons. Cross sits calmly at the wheel and drives his prototype with economical movements on the British country roads.
"Without compromising on off-road capabilities and sacrificing luxury, this time we want to compete with the best competitors from Germany in terms of driving dynamics as well," says Cross. He mentions the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne as touchstones.
The Range Rover Sport, you shouldn’t be mistaken, is not a small car. At 4.85 meters, it measures just 15 centimeters less than the large range, and with 28 centimeters of ground clearance and 85 centimeters fording depth, it also comes close to the original. When it comes to the axle articulation, which is important off-road, it lags a bit, but clearly outperforms the large German SUVs
420 kilograms lighter than its predecessor
For example, the Range Rover Sport can feel its way into a 54.6 centimeter deep hole with the right rear wheel, while the left rear wheel continues to run on a level surface, and none of the wheels lifts off the ground. The VW Touareg only manages this up to a height difference of 47.6 centimeters, the BMW X5 has to give up at 42.4, the Audi Q7 at 37.3 and so on.
But off-road skills are only required. More than ever, the freestyle is agility on the road. The Range Rover Sport now shares the platform with the large Range Rover and no longer uses the heavy construction of the smaller but less modern Discovery model.
This is why the Range Rover Sport is now also made entirely of aluminum and weighs around 420 kilos less than its predecessor. "At the latest in the curve you notice every kilo that the car weighs less," says test driver Cross .
The Range Rover Sport rushes ahead surprisingly quickly and tightly, ironing over bumps and cobblestones much more confidently than its predecessor.
The diesel consumes only 7.3 liters according to the standard
Thanks to a rear-biased power distribution of the all-wheel drive (58:42 percent) and a lower center of gravity, the car takes the corners with more verve and lets its occupants participate more clearly in the action. "Wherever you like to think you’re above things in a Range Rover, you’re right in the middle of it all," says Cross.
You travel in new armchairs, reach into a smaller steering wheel and look at new consoles, which also require a little more space. And so that there is really a close bond between man and machine, a gear knob protrudes from the center tunnel instead of the rotary control for the eight-speed automatic.
In addition to the 510 hp V8 supercharger from Cross ’test car, the three-liter V6 diesel will be used at the start of sales in September, which is offered with either 258 or 292 hp.
The engines not only accelerate better, drive faster and, in the case of the V8 model, even crack the 250 km / h mark for the first time. They’re also more economical. "In the best case scenario, consumption goes down by 24 percent," says project manager Craig Carter, and mentions a standard value of 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers for the 258 hp model, which will cost just under 60,000 euros.
You can even drive in groups of seven
A diesel hybrid with a consumption of around six liters will be presented at the IAA in September. There is also a V8 diesel with 338 hp, and Land Rover is even building a four-cylinder gasoline engine for the Chinese market. So far it is only available in the smaller Evoque and Freelander models, where it makes 241 hp.
Although the Range Rover Sport is only six centimeters longer than it used to be, the engineers have stretched the wheelbase by almost 18 centimeters and made the car six centimeters wider. Both of these also benefit the interior.
Adults can now sit comfortably in the second row (24 millimeters more knee room), the trunk is larger (the exact figure has not yet been determined), and for the first time there is also a third row of seats on request for the Range Rover Sport.
Although it only offers space for children, it can be lowered electrically into the floor at the push of a button and pulled out again if necessary.
An all-terrain vehicle for asphalt cowboys
There is a similar level of convenience when it comes to assistance systems: from lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control to automatic parking, everything that is standard in the luxury class today is offered (at an additional cost).
You have to keep in mind that the Range Rover Sport is a true off-road vehicle, but is not necessarily used that way. The apparently so enthusiastic New York customers are more asphalt cowboys.
So it made sense to offer a version of the Range Rover Sport with restricted off-road capabilities for the first time. All-wheel drive is always standard, but the special gear reduction has to be booked separately.
Peter Modelhart, the managing director of Land Rover Germany, does not yet know whether the waiver of full off-road capabilities will be accepted. The regular customers would probably take the full program, but for new customers who buy a Range Rover Sport for the first time, it could be different.
Land Rover customers prefer it real
On the other hand, Modelhart refers to the front-wheel drive versions of the smaller Evoque and Freelander models and their modest contributions to sales: “Not even five percent. At the end of the day, ”says the managing director,“ you buy yourself into a brand of off-road vehicle. ”That means: Land Rover customers prefer to have it real.
Even if a false secret agent does not give the worst picture in faked traffic conditions.
