What happens to me personally and again is the exchange with you, my readers. It is nice to see that you can run correctly for the topics of electromobility, electric and hybrid cars. Therefore, I was also happy when my reader Othmar Wolf has me his review of Hyundai Ioniq Electric sent. I have added this in retrospect for you.
Experience report: Hyundai Ioniq Electric
After reporting so much positive from the new electric Hyundai Ioniq, I became pretty curious. According to the factory information, a range of approx. Be possible 250 km. Since I drive a Kia Soul eve for a year, which with a battery capacity of 27 kWh a practical range of approx. 170 km, the Ioniq, on the other hand, has 28 kWh, so only a kWh more installed, I wanted to know exactly. On the 15th.March 2017 I got at FA. Lietz, Wieselburg, thankful way, a rental car for testing.
We, my wife Heidi is also enthusiastic electric driver, so planned a ride to Salzburg, quite exactly 200 km of motorway ride, cozy pace, not to provoke problems from the outset. I have entered the destination airportcenter Salzburg as a destination AirPortCenter Salzburg and as evasive stations Vorchdorf McDonalds and Raststation Mondsee. Start in Petzenkirchen with full battery, boosted 204 km, distance to Salzburg 200km according to Navi. So it could be scarce.
We go, on the highway the cruise on the cruise on 110 km / h, so that we can overtake at least the trucks. Until Haag, the highway constantly rises, so it is not surprised that the Navi indicates 152 km there, but the battery indicator but only 144 km. Just courage, we continue at the same pace, always observing the two ads.
Meanwhile, we get to know the driving assistant, which automatically reduces the speed when we approach a preceding vehicle. Likewise, the lane support assistant, which also performs steering movements with light pressure, if one comes too close to the road markings. A test with released steering wheel results, the car distracts completely automatically in curves, but after approx. 10 seconds a warning sound sounds and the display “Do not let go of the steering wheel” appears on the display, otherwise the wizard will be deactivated.
Nearest checkpoint in Vorchdorf, Navi indicates 90km, battery level only 70 km, it stands for me, Salzburg is no longer expanding, because the terrain is up to Mondsee rising to Mondsee. So I program the Navi on goal Reststation Mondsee, distance 52 km, battery indicator 62 km, so 10 km “Reserve”. Speed continues 110 km / h. After a short time we have to realize that this reserve shrinks quickly, in Regau only 5 km, we will not reach Mondsee with this pace. So reduce speed, for the time being to 100 km / h, let’s see if the reserve remains constant. Unfortunately, she does not, we at times only 3 km reserve. So we reduce at 85km / h, so that our upholstery climbs back to 5 km and so we reach the charging station Mondsee. Some trucks overtake us, but it’s no different when we do not want to stand on the highway.
In Mondsee we plug in the CCS charging cable, load card passing by the RFID display and start the load. Great, we thought and after it was already lunch, we went straight to the restaurant. With my plane friend I want to meet in Salzburg, I reconcile a new meeting place and although Hotel Kaiserhof in Anif, a well-known E-driver’s meeting with SMatrics Triplader and 6 Tesla Supercharger. The greater distance does not matter now, because we will have full batteries in a few minutes, we thought.
But when we came to the car, we only had a mendant 28% state of charge, the charging process had been interrupted in the middle of it! So we tried again infect, identify with charging card, charge starts again. We stayed in the vehicle this time, always watching the ads. After a few minutes we had 80km at the display, distance to the Kaiserhof are 48km, so we started. Since it was almost consistently falling terrain to Salzburg, we put the cruise control at 120km / h and reached our goal loose with 43 rest km.
For example, we sit in the guest room. The boss there is self-enthusiastic electric driver and owner of a 750 hp Tesla. In between, I control the charging station for safety’s sake, unfortunately the charge has been broken at 30% again. So again recess, watch, this time it seems to work. At 94%, it is back again and can not be started again with the CCS plug. I try it with the 43 kW type2 plug and then it works up to 100%.
The drive home promises to be exciting. According to Navi, 213 km are to drive home, the battery indicator is only available to us 200 km. That does not sound good, but from my experience with the Kia I know that the return trip to the east because of tailwind and falling terrain is much more energy-saving than the outward journey. Yes, in an electric vehicle such circumstances play a considerable role!
Therefore, I plan on Navi directly Petzenkirchen, I am confident. To accommodate the car something we put the cruise this time only at 100km / h, the heating is no longer necessary because we already have 14 ° C outside temperature and the car is stood in the sun all the time in the sun. So loud cheap parameters.
In Mondsee our “negative upholstery” has already fallen to -2km and from Regau we are already in the positive area, that is, the battery indicator is already greater than the distance at the Navi. This tendency remains the same, in Strengberg we have + 15km and at home in Petzenkirchen we come with a remainder of 20km.
My conclusion: The IoniQ actually waits with amazing performance, although the battery capacity with 28 kWh does not appear excessively high. The promised ranges of over 200 km are actually achievable, but only with moderate speeds, when traveling away from the highways, in any case. The technical refinements require some incorporation, a study of the manual before driving is recommended. I had to do that while driving, good that my wife could intuitively act the peculiarities of the new electric car institutionally. Positive we found the space offer, the size of the trunk and the headroom on the rear seats, despite the rear of the vehicle pulled down. Negative is for me only the ugly front portion reminiscent of a plastic Legoauto.
General: Very important for longer exits is a detailed route planning with evasive charging stations, because the loaders are sometimes out of operation. The necessary information Hiezu can be found on WWW.Goingelectric.DE / Current tank stations.

Thanks for this informative report on the Ioniq Elektro. Only for info: The battery management is set so that the battery is charged only to a maximum of 94% on the CCS fast loader, so that it is spared and last. This feature is very useful. On the type 2 plug he unfortunately only loads with a phase, which is considerably slower (I mean with max. 6.6 kWh) and can be loaded up to 100%. That the charge sometimes breaks off, may not be on the vehicle but possibly on the charging column. I’ve already driven with my Ioniq with a cargo at warm temperatures over 230 km without problems. However, high climate with an average speed of approx. 70 km / h.
