The Portuguese Carlos Tavares trims the auto concentant Stellantis, founded a year ago, on the production of electric cars. But he would have wished for a different way – and doubts that the Stromer will make the hoped -for climate contribution.

The political guidelines had not given the manufacturers any creative freedom to bring in other ideas, said Tavares in a “Handelsblatt” interview. The electric drives are 50 percent more expensive than the combustion engines and drove the prices for new cars. This increases the risk that the middle class can no longer buy cars and the state coffers would be overwhelmed.

Electric cars are currently much more expensive

A positive contribution of the e-cars to climate protection, the head of the second largest European car company behind Volkswagen questioned: «We will only know in 10 or 15 years what results the electrification will actually bring to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.»

One has to talk about the CO2 footprint of the battery, because at the European EnergyMix, an electric car only has to drive 70,000 kilometers to compensate for a bad CO2 balance of the battery creation. The head of the Opel mother named powerful hybrid cars as faster and cheaper innovation, which would have brought an immediate CO2 advantage.

In fact, the distortion of reality when crediting electric cars in the fleet balance is a problem. Electric cars and plug-in hybridsind not only, but also very popular because of the high funding amounts and make up almost 50 percent in new car sales. Electromobility is calculated in the EU with zero grams CO2 in the fleet billing, but this is not realistic. Because depending on the respective electricity mix, e-cars sometimes cause more emissions than combustion engineers .

Tavares warns of social consequences

Tavares nevertheless called for the electrical subsidies to be maintained up to at least 2025. Stellantis had already started the transformation of all factories. "Without a gradual transition, the social consequences will be great," warned Tavares. «And we are not alone: we have an entire system of suppliers around us who have to act as quickly as we do.»

The Stelltis boss also defended the renovation of the manufacturer Opel, which was taken over in 2017. «A lot is criticized by what we have done at Opel since 2017. But what does not bother anyone is that Opel earns money now.»The goal remains to make the German locations more autonomous. At the end of the year, IG Metall prevented the works of Eisenach and Russelsheim from being removed from the German Opel Society.According to their own statements, the group with the main brands Fiat and Peugeot is planning investments of more than 30 billion euros by 2025. At the moment, 33 electrified vehicles are available, and eight battery electricals are to come onto the market in the next year and a half. A long -term strategy plan wants Stellantis on 1. Believe many in this country still haven’t understood it!!! The Greens and FFF children … don’t want us to drive all electrically, but that we no longer drive! This can only be achieved at high costs and shortage and the new government is working massively on it!!!!

Should these statements be heard (and read). That would be really fair to the population. Why do I have to co -finance with my tax vehicles, for which they are also happy to have in the area of well over € 50,000?Nevertheless, a modern petrol engine and diesel are at least as low in Emmissions?? If you want to drive a cars and can be fun, you should do so, but you should also pay fully. However, over 70% of Germans does not want a mobility because of the serious disadvantages and that should be respected, especially from politics.Determine the era in the minorities what the mass has to do and leave, no matter what it costs, we should retire. From now on again reality and no utopia.

  3. Spread subsidies
The statement is long overdue. Without the huge subsidies, the sale of the vehicles would never get to a relevant size. The mass can afford an electric vehicle for two reasons. The acquisition costs are too high that the residual values are too low. Too low because consumers cannot and do not want to carry the risk of a defective battery in a 5-6 year old car. The mass of citizens can only afford used vehicles. And it means that in the period of use you have to save the delta between the residual value of the old vehicle and the new used one. And the invoice does not work on e-vehicles.

E-cars are not in their current form. 2 big factors play a role there. On the one hand, the life of the vehicles depends on the production date of the battery and on the other hand there is far too much IT and communication interfaces installed, all of which have to be secured by permanent updates. How long will they be and how long are the built -in components updateable at all? Well and ultimately the big scam with 0g CO2 does not make the cars more likeable to me either. Currently, an electric car is a lot of money despite funding for little lifetime. Something should be changed urgently.

  5. Car manager with foot on the e-brake
    H. Tavares belongs to the dying art car manager, in whose veins petrol flees & that find it difficult to switch to electrons. No interview from him in recent years in which he does not the climate-& The EU’s auto policy would have massively criticized. His motif is clear: keep the production facilities for combustion cars going to run in order to make profits, they may also be "dirty" with regard to nature & environment (oil economy) and air & climate (operation of burner cars)). Apparently he has no better argument against e -cars than long overtaking environmental balance sheets – when does the CO2 from battery production pay for itself? One thing is as safe as the amen in the church: e-mobility in its run also holds a H.Tavares not up.

But not so safe at all. The surveys result in completely different values. If you are traveling as a professional driver, you can only shake your head in disbelief about the naivety of some people that this completely immature technology should enrich our everyday work. Much heavier truck (tire abrasion) with much less load .Without almost sufficient power sources for reloading, every 300 km. Dream on!

The gentleman criticizes electric drives and would therefore exclude some customers from buying a new car. At the same time, however, he calls for "powerful … hybrids" in which both drive types must be installed. Someone realized that their group cannot keep up with technically and would like to stop the time a little. We heard that in Germany in Germany as the same 2-3 years ago.

The man is right there. A lot is presented with regard to electric cars. This is sometimes not better with combustion engines. The difference is, however, the most common type of motorized locomotion and cannot be changed because of an ideology. The combustion engine is not the great evil of mankind and the electric car is not the salvation bringer. Because proof of the latter will provide time.

  10. Hybrids can only be a transition
If Mr. Tavares raves about hybrids, he probably didn’t understand what decarbonization is (it already says the word). With a hybrid, the driving profile is crucial for CO2 savings over the lifetime. If the car is never loaded with green electricity, the CO2 emissions due to more weight and greater production effort is even higher than with a pure combustion engine. It is very obvious that he just wants to sell the old technology with which the manufacturers still earn most of the money as possible. The 70.000km of a BEV up to the CO2 savings apply the rest only to extremely large batteries and are also only a snapshot. The development continues and that very quickly. Nevertheless, such a car drives into the plus.

That is true with the plugin hybrids, why was the Opel Ampera from 2012 a may fly?
