The year 2009 was dominated by the scrapping bonus and the car crisis. Yet almost never before have so many cars been sold in Germany. Most of this success was due to a car that has been on the market since 2003.
E.t was the year of the importers. It was the year of the Italians, that of Fiat and especially that of the Panda: 59,114 of the small cars were sold in Germany in 2009. Already on the market in the current version since 2003, it experienced the entire past year as the second spring: 298 percent was the rate of increase compared to 2008, more than a third of all Fiat sales in Germany (163,953) were based on the mini model The Italians were able to increase their previous year‘s result by 86 percent.
Everything was great if it weren’t for that – how could it be otherwise? – Volkswagen. Despite the scrappage bonus, the Wolfsburg-based company was able to "only" increase the number of cars sold by 31 percent compared to the Italians, but with 805,262 vehicles in 2009 they are still unconquerable for any other manufacturer. While they only landed ninth (18,724, +21 percent) in the statistics of small cars with the VW Fox, they did away with the new generation of poles in the slightly larger small cars: 109,005 of these were handed over to customers.
Second place in the small car category went to Opel with the Corsa (106,980, + 58 percent), a success that could also be repeated a class higher in the compacts: The old Astra benefited from very cheap sales, the new one, which has been delivered since December from a large number of early registrations on the part of the dealers: Here too, second place with 104,750 pieces and an increase of 37.7 percent.
Conversely, this means that what Fiat did not succeed overall, Opel also does not succeed in Volkswagen’s core segments. Here, too, the better remains the enemy of the good: the VW Golf – basically counted together with the Jetta notchback version in the figures of the Federal Motor Transport Authority – comes to a total of 366,230 units, an increase of 58 percent over 2008 and with a 34 percent market share in the compact class, exactly one third of all models on offer.
If the Opel employees had enough to cope with anyway thanks to takeover skirmishes, they only achieved limited success in the middle class: The Opel Insignia, which has been on the market since November 2008, landed in fifth place last year with 36,347 cars sold, while VW from its four-year-old Passat model sold 84,729 units. Again first place for the ore competitor, but measured against the Opel Vectra, which was recently spurned, a respectable success for Opel. Between the two rivals are the C-Class from Mercedes (77,394, + 21 percent), Audi A4 and S4 (75,341, minus 23.7 percent) and BMW 3 Series (72,288, minus 17.2 percent).
The minus at Audi and BMW already indicates that larger and higher quality cars had a hard time in 2009. With the exception of the new E-Class (48,221, + 12 percent), all of the other top ten in the upper middle class showed a minus sign compared to the previous year: the BMW 5 Series (34,374, -23 percent), Audi A6 and S6 (32,887 , minus 27 percent) and for the fourth-placed Volvo 70 it is almost 37 percent, given only 6339 cars.
At the back it is getting more and more tragic. If the upper middle class has lost 16 percent compared to 2008, the upper class has lost 18 percent. The BMW 7 Series, which was reissued in November 2008, can dampen the crash a little with an increase of 74 percent (7352), but it cannot prevent it.
Sports cars got it even worse: minus 26 percent, whereas BMW was again the only one with positive increases (Z4: 5025, + 186 percent). But even that was only enough for fourth place. The three on the podium – Porsche 911 (6414, minus 20 percent), Audi TT (6109, minus 43 percent) and Mercedes SLK (5099, minus 48 percent) – made an even sadder one despite their claim to leadership in terms of sales figures figure.
Perhaps, however, the preference for vehicle types will also shift. Perhaps business people and traveling salespeople prefer to drive long-legged SUVs that suggest safety (+ 3 percent) instead of mid-range and upper-class limousines. maybe in difficult times you prefer to sit a little higher anyway and at least have a little more freedom around your head in the car (mini vans + 6 percent). who knows.
What is certain, however, is that 3.81 million cars sold thanks to the scrappage bonus are also a record, as is the increase of 23 percent compared to 2008. For the automotive industry, one thing is also certain: It won’t be that easy again.
