The R5 will probably start in 2023, followed by the R4 in 2025. The Twingo should be dropped
Last Thursday, Renault made the big hit in terms of electromobility with its Renaulution press conference. The waves are still beating up. One of the highlights was the presentation of the new Renault 5.
Some media then speculated that the new electric model should replace the Zoe. This is now being denied by the manufacturer, as Autocar reports.
According to the report, the planned Renault 5 is to compete in the "supermini" segment; this roughly corresponds to the B segment (small car segment). That would put him in the same class as the Zoe.
"So it would be silly to stop vehicles that are bestsellers in their segment." (Laurens van den Acker on the future of Zoe)
But that does not mean that the Zoe will be discontinued because of it: “Is it the end of the Zoe?” Asked the head designer of the Renault Group, Laurens van den Acker, and answered himself: “The answer is no, because he Zoe is the best-selling electric car in Europe, so it would be silly to stop vehicles that are bestsellers in their segment. " We add: The Zoe is also the most popular electric car in Germany and the best-selling Renault.
In comparison to the Renault 5 visually not quite as attractive: The Zoe
For us, the Renault 5 also looks significantly sportier than the plump Zoe. In this respect, we could imagine that the newcomer would get a stronger drive. The Zoe could be positioned underneath as an electric entry-level model in the future. The more powerful engines with 100 kW (135 PS) would then go to the R5. The R5 could also compete better against the chic Peugeot e-208 than the plump, old-fashioned Zoe.
In any case, Zoe stays. The statements made by Autocar about the future of the Clio are not quite as clear: Gilles Vidal, who has worked under Laurens van den Acker as chief designer of the Renault brand since October, said: "Now is the time to question what is currently available. He is not intended to replace the Clio as such, but there are questions about the Clio and the Captur: what they stand for, which energy source they should use depending on the regulations of the respective country. "
Pardon, Monsieur Vidal, that sounds a bit like fooling around: The 5 is not supposed to replace the Clio, but it could be that the 5 comes and the conventionally powered Clio (for example because of Euro 7) goes …

Renault has not yet given any information on the size or segment of the Renault 5. Could the car also compete in the A segment and thus replace the Twingo? The small car has been around since 2014, almost as long as the Zoe, which started in 2013. In addition, the cooperation with Smart will not be around for much longer. But no A-segment car appears in Renault's future plans, so the Twingo will probably expire:
The graph suggests that the R5 is the B-segment electric car for 2023. Autocar suspects that too. And what about the new Renault 4 that is already being speculated about? Could it become the registered B-segment car for 2025? Possible. If the Zoe holds out until 2025, it would make the affordable entry-level model. There is also a sporty small car (R5) and a useful and slightly larger small car (R4). Even with the historical models, the R5 was slightly smaller than the R4, which also looked more like a van.
