Renault also accelerates his electric car strategy-strategy

As part of the “Renault Eways” event, Renault Group has announced the acceleration of its electromobility strategy today – like some other automakers – today. Main pillars of the E-strategy are therefore a comprehensive model offensive, the new electro-industrial pole “Renault Electricity” in Northern France, the E-Powertrain Megafactory in Normandy, the strategic partnership with Envision AESC to build a battery gigafactory in Douai and a common Project for the development of sustainable batteries with the French start-up Verkor. By 2025, the Renault Group wants to launch ten new fully electric models. Thus, the company wants to offer one of the most sustainable model pallets in Europe, with an e-share of more than 65 percent. This includes the new Renault 5 as well as a “4EVER” called “4EVER”, another new edition of a Renault classic. From 2024 a fully electric alpine should follow.

By 2030, up to 90 percent of the Renault models sold should have a fully electric drive. The company wants to profile itself as a key actor on the way to affordable electromobility.

A day with “historical meaning”

In the case of battery production, among other things, the Renault Group includes strategic cooperation with Envision AESC to build a battery megaFactory in the French Douai. Another measure is a project with the French start-up company Verkor to develop and manufacture innovative high-performance batteries together in France. By standardizing the cell architecture, the costs for batteries should decline by 60 percent by 2030. Likewise, a new electric powertrain is to be developed, which can be produced by 30 percent cheaper.

The central component of the strategy is the partnership with the battery manufacturer Envision AESC. The goal is to set up a battery megaFactory with a capacity of 9 GWh in 2024. The capacity should rise in perspective by 2030 to 24 GWh. In the neighborhood for the new electric industry Renault Electricity in northern France, the location is to produce modern, cost-effective, low-carbon and secure batteries for electric models, including the future Renault 5.

400.000 E-cars per year from 2025

Under the umbrella of Electricity, three Renault production sites in North France will therefore be summarized in the future: Douai, Maubeuge and Ruitz. In the next few years, the Renault Group wants to make these works to a competitive and efficient production association for electric cars in Europe – with an annual production of 400.000 vehicles up to 2025.

As a further step, the RENAULT Group signed the letter of intent to participate with 20 percent of the French start-up company Verkor. The two partners jointly want to develop a high-performance battery for the C segment and higher vehicle classes of the Renault brand as well as for the vehicles of the sports car brand Alpine. A pilot production of battery cells and modules should start from 2022 in France. In a second step, Verkor from 2026 wants to build the first Gigafactory for high-performance batteries in France, with an initial capacity of 10 GWh for the Renault Group, which could rise to 20 GWh by 2030.

In less than ten years, the Renault Group wants to gradually lower the cost of battery packs by 60 percent. The aim is less than $ 100 / kWh in 2025 and less than $ 80 / kWh with the introduction of solids planned from 2030 in the Alliance Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.

Innovations for the powertrain

As one of the first OEM, the Renault Group has developed its own electric motor – without rare earths (no permanent magnets) and based on the technology of the electrically excited synchronous motor. From 2024 further technological improvements will be introduced, with the goal of higher efficiency and lower costs.

In addition, Renault Group has agreed a partnership with the French start-up Whylot for an innovative axial flow electric engine. This technology is initially used in hybrid drive strands to reduce costs by five percent while reducing CO2 emissions to WLTP to up to 2.5 grams per kilometer. The Renault Group will be the first manufacturer who produces the axial flow E engines from 2025 on a large scale.

More efficiency, lower costs

In the field of power electronics, the Renault Group wants to expand control over the value chain by integrating the inverter, the DC-DC converter and the on-board charger (OBC) into a box from our own production. With a compact design, this “one-box” project will be 800-volt compliant. Since it can be used across all platforms and drive strands (BEV, HEV, PHEV) and has fewer parts, the costs can also be reduced. The power modules for inverters, DC-DC converters and OBC are on silicon carbide or. Gallium nitride is based on the strategic partnership with ST Microelectronics.

In addition, the Renault Group works on a more compact electric powertrain, the so-called all-in-one system. This electric drive train integrates the E-motor, the reduction gear and power electronics in a single pack (One Box Project): This allows a volume reduction by a total of 45 percent. Added to this is a cost reduction of 30 percent for the entire powertrain and a 45 percent lower energy consumption according to WLTP, which should allow an additional range of up to 20 kilometers.

Two new platforms exclusively for e-cars

Due to specially developed platforms for electric cars, the Renault Group wants to further increase the efficiency of your E-vehicles. The CMF-eV platform will in future be used in the C and D segment. Only up to 2025 should be on alliance level 700.000 vehicles built on this technical base. Thanks to low weight and modern thermal management, the CMF-eV architecture should enable a WLTP range of up to 580 kilometers. The completely new Megane, which is produced from 2022 in Douai, is already based on the CMF-eV platform.

In the B segment, the CMF-BEV platform is intended to provide affordable electric cars for wide customer circuits. Compared to the platform used for the ZOE, the cost of the CMF-Bev platform decreases by 33 percent. The CMF-Bev platform should allow ranges of up to 400 kilometers. The new, fully electric Renault 5 approximately is based on the CMF-B EV platform.

  3. The Kangoo Electric is a tragedy of Renault anyway. For years he is vaguely announced and now he is on the 2. Year 2022 postponed.
