As a pioneer in the development of “Smart Islands“, the Renault Group uses innovation with its mobility brand MOBILIZE and offers cities and regions solutions on the way to climate neutrality. After Belle-lle-en-Mer in France and Porto Santo in Portugal, the Brazilian island group Fernando de Noronha becomes a “smart area”. On the UNESCO World Nature Archipelago, a complete energy management system of electric cars, solar cells operated charging stations and the feedback of excess energy into the power grid.
Fernando de Noronha is located about 350 kilometers from the northeast coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its diverse flora and fauna. The warm, crystal clear waters around the archipelago are the home of sea turtles, skates, dolphins and sharks. More than ever, the energy transition and protection of nature have priority. That’s why Renault Group in Brazil in 2019, together with the local government, raised the “Noronha Zero Carbon Project” from baptism to create an intelligent ecosystem on the islands.
The aim of Noronha Zero Carbon project is to fundamentally alter the energy-ecosystem of the archipelago, which is currently based predominantly on fossil fuels, to switch to clean, renewable energy sources to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Solar energy for electric cars
The Teams of the Renault Group in Brazil works according to a current communication already dedicated to the conversion of the energy ecosystem on the archipelago. The start made the delivery of purely electric vehicles to the island administration. In the meantime, the first islanders rose on electric vehicles. To date, on the islands, two dozen Renault Zoe, Twizy and Kangoo z.E. bought. The goal is that until 2030 on Fernando de Noronha no more vehicles with internal combustion engine are traveling.
In parallel, Renault works on providing the island with clean and renewable energy. Since 2021, the automaker offers a complete public solar charging system together with its partners. Each station can supply up to six E cars simultaneously with electricity and supplies 26 MWh energy per year. This corresponds to 180.000 Emission-free kilometers traveled and avoids the consumption of good 20.000 liters fossil fuel. The excess energy is fed into the power grid and can be used by the local population.
In 2020, an agreement on the technical cooperation between the administration and Celpe, the Energiegesellschaft of the Federal State of Pernambuco, was signed, to which the islands belong. It enables commissioning of two new photovoltaic battery stations, which enhance the storage system on the island and double the range of clean energy at peak times.
“We try to build a complete ecosystem from electric vehicles, charging stations and power stores based on renewable energies. A big step towards decarbonization of this idyllic place.”Livia, Renault Group Partnership Manager, Brazil
Belle-lle, Porto-Santo and the island group Fernando de Noronha are examples that show that it is possible to promote the development of sustainable areas with a zero-carbon footprint. There are only two ingredients for this: the adaptation of the facilities to the individual circumstances, whether on islands or in urban areas – and above all the use of solar energy, an inexhaustible resource.

These islands have some advantages over Germany:
Great project – please much more of it &# 128578;
Germany could also have that with the “Energy turning from below“
And I love that on Renault. He is really strong for environmental protection.
I do not know any German manufacturer who supports so much positive projects. You only look at the production of the Zoe.
In comparison, VW is the most important support of the Chinese leadership, which extends the Uiguren, because here you can make the parts for the VW brands for an appel and N egg. Everything about these cars is “Made in China”.
And assembled are the VW then from Eastern European temporary workers who make only minimum contributions to health and pension insurance.
Thank you for the future of our children who will soon have to commute to Asia to work.
The main thing dividends and board bonuses.
