In October 2021, the Renault Zoe overtook the VW ID.3 as Europe’s most popular electric car. This now emerges from an evaluation by the analyst firm JATO Dynamics for 26 European countries.

In October 2021, a total of 181,300 battery electric cars (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were registered. This corresponds to a market share of the electrified models of 23 percent – a new monthly record. The market share of diesel models, on the other hand, fell further to just 19 percent.

As for the individual models, Renault Zoe was responsible for the BEVs in first place, followed by the VW ID.3 and the inexpensive newcomer Dacia Spring. The Skoda Enyaq, VW ID.4 and Fiat 500 e also sold well:

The Tesla Model 3, which clearly landed in first place in September 2021 with over 24,000 units, is not even among the top ten in Europe this time. That should have something to do with the end of the third quarter in September – then Tesla is always particularly strong.

If you take the first ten months of the year together, the Model 3 sold around 102,000 units, the VW ID.3 around 58,000 units and the Renault Zoe sold around 52,000 units. These are probably also the best-selling electric cars to date in 2021.

In the JATO tables (PDF) However, sales are only broken down by model, not also by drive type. That means, for example, they cannot tell how many electrically powered Peugeot 208s were sold in the first ten months of the year.

In general, October was a difficult month for the European automotive industry. Due to the global chip shortage and the corona pandemic, total approvals fell by 30 percent to 790,652 units compared to October 2020. The decrease compared to 2019 was even greater:

In the first ten months of the year, however, the sales volume rose by 2.6% to 9.85 million cars compared to the same period last year.

The problems also caused shifts between the corporations. In October, for example, the VW group lost its leadership position in monthly registrations – this is only happening for the second time since 2000. Instead, the Stellantis group took over the lead.
