The Audi didn’t look really old next to the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class. Nevertheless, the Ingolstadt-based company freshened up their A4. The focus was on consumption.

F.The Audi A4 has now been redesigned to battle it out with the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class.

The appearance of the sedan and station wagon has been gently improved and, thanks to the start-stop system that is now always standard, should consume an average of eleven percent less than before.

Subtle revision

The optical lifting is rather subtle. The most eye-catching feature is the redesigned radiator grille, the upper corners of which are now bevelled like the larger A6. There are also angular air inlets and angular instead of round secondary lights. There is a modified bumper at the rear, and new colors and materials are available for the interior.

Four petrol and six diesel engines are available for the drive. The 1.8-liter turbo gasoline engine with 170 hp and a standard consumption of 5.6 liters is new to the range. The previous engine with 160 hp still required 7.1 liters. The entry-level engine remains the 1.8 TFSI with 120 hp, the top engine is now a supercharged 3.0-liter petrol engine with 272 hp. In the S4 sports model, it has 333 hp.

The new fuel savers

On the diesel side, a 3.0-liter engine replaces the 2.7-liter diesel engine previously offered. Despite its power of 204 hp, it should get by with an average of 4.9 liters of fuel. Alternatively, there is a more powerful variant with 245 hp. There is also a choice of four revised four-cylinder diesels with performance values between 120 hp and 177 hp. The most economical diesel with 136 hp should only consume 4.2 liters.

Except for the weakest version, these are equipped with a new centrifugal pendulum that ensures smooth running at low speeds. So an earlier upshift and thus a particularly economical driving style should be possible.

The power transmission in the different engine variants takes place via a manual six-speed gearbox, a continuously variable automatic or a dual clutch gearbox.

With drowsiness warning as standard

All variants of the mid-range model are now equipped with electromechanical power steering, which reduces fuel consumption by 0.3 liters by doing without a hydraulic pump. In addition, it automatically compensates for undesired changes in direction when braking on one-sided slippery surface.

A new feature of the assistance systems is driver monitoring with drowsiness warning, which is standard on all models.

Audi remains the cheapest model

The prices for the overhauled A4 rise slightly and start just below the 30,000 euro mark. This means that the Audi remains the cheapest model in the premium trio.

The new BMW 3 Series will initially be available at prices starting at 35,350 euros, the Mercedes C-Class starting at 32,695 euros.
