German market larger than France and Great Britain combined
Car registrations in Europe fell to just under 12 million in the Corona year 2020 (more precisely: to 11,961,182 units), which corresponds to a sharp decrease of 24 percent. But the xEVs (i.e. electric cars = BEVs, plug-in hybrids = PHEVs and hybrids = HEVs) increased significantly. The reasons include the European Union’s stricter emissions requirements.
According to the European car manufacturers association ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europeens d’Automobiles), the registrations of plug-in hybrids and electric cars have increased in Europe (European Union plus the EFTA countries Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Great Britain) compared to the previous year by 144 percent to around 1.4 million vehicles (1,364,813 units). That corresponds to a very decent market share of 11 percent.
New car registrations in 2020 (Europe)
- BEVs (including FCEVs): 745,684 (plus 107 percent), market share 6.2 percent
- PHEV: 619,129 (plus 210 percent), market share 5.2 percent
- BEVs and PHEVs: 1,364,813 (plus 144 percent), market share 11.4 percent
- HEVs: 1,447,973 (plus 51 percent) with a share of 12.1 percent.
- Total passenger car market: 11,961,182 (minus 24.3 percent)
What the sum of electric cars and plug-in hybrids As far as is concerned, Germany was by far the most important market in 2020 – it accounts for over a quarter. The six highest-volume markets accounted for over three quarters of total sales in 2020 as a whole:
- Germany – 394,943 (up 263 percent)
- France – 185,719 (up 202 percent)
- Great Britain – 175,082 (up 140 percent)
- Norway – 105,709 (up 33 percent)
- Sweden – 94,077 (up 133 percent)
- Netherlands – 89,129 (up 34 percent)
The German market was thus more voluminous in the past year than the next two markets, France and Great Britain combined.

BEVs and PHEVs for 2020 as a whole
Here you can see the numbers for electric cars (BEVs, in green) and for plug-in hybrids (PHEVs, in blue). The fuel cell cars (FCEVs) were apparently added to the BEVs, the range extender cars (EREFs) to the PHEVs, as can be seen from the graphics below. Because of the small number of units, both hardly play a role anyway.
