With the large air inlets under the grille and the sharp headlights (with LED daytime running lights like Audi), the Seat Leon looks more sporty and aggressive.

Even the crisp rear doesn’t look like a family carriage. And the taillights, like the headlights, seem to have been supplied by the Audi design studio.

VW unveiled the new Golf in September. But the group is already showing innovations based on the Golf VII, including the Seat Leon after the Audi A3. It’s something like Seat’s last chance.
D.This shot has to be spot on: When Seat officially pulls the scarf off the new Leon at the Paris Salon at the end of September, the fate of the brand may well be decided once and for all.
Because if the compact from the south flops, the ailing VW subsidiary may be over. The Spaniards know that and have put a lot of effort into every discipline. The Leon therefore not only looks more seductive and sportier than ever, it is also more practical, more economical and more intelligent.
Leon wants to be a Latin lover
In addition to the quick lines of the new head of design Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, this is mainly made possible by access to the technology for the most important car in the group. The Leon, which will be available at the end of November, is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) and is a close relative of the new VW Golf.
Where the customer from Lower Saxony is something like the conservative constant in the car business, the Leon gives the Latin lover in the compact class. Muscular, drawn with clear lines and strong proportions, he stands proud, sporty and at attention on the street. "The car is bursting with self-confidence and at first glance looks very determined," says Mesonero.
Shorter than its predecessor, but more space
Seat not only worked on the shape, but also on the format. At 4.26 meters, the car is around five centimeters shorter than before, but has six centimeters more wheelbase.
The overhangs are correspondingly short and crisp. Nevertheless, there is in the interior, which looks two classes more noble and now plays at A3 level, more space in all seats, and the trunk grows by around 40 to 380 liters.
While the Spaniards have found their own line on the drawing board, they use the advantages of the group under the sheet metal and rely on the same construction kit as the Golf. That means up to 90 kilograms less weight, up to 22 percent less fuel consumption and lots of new infotainment and assistance systems.
Lots of electronics from the VW kit
On request, the Leon is available with a large touchscreen navigation system and menu navigation that is child’s play. The electronics monitor compliance with the lane and, if necessary, take corrective action on the steering wheel, warn the driver before he becomes too tired and automatically ignite the high beam.
The Leon will start with two diesels at the turn of the year: a 150 hp 2.0-liter and a 1.6-liter with 105 hp, the most economical version with the automatic start-stop system now available for all engines 3.7 liters comes. At the beginning of next year, petrol engines with a displacement of 1.2, 1.4 or 1.8 liters and 86 to 180 hp and two more diesels with 90 and 184 hp will follow. The cheapest option should be around 16,000 euros.
For the first time there will also be a Leon station wagon
The five-door model now announced for Paris will not be the only one: soon there will also be a three-door model and, for the first time in the Seat class, a station wagon.
And if everything goes as planned, the Spanish problem child could even treat himself to a couple of really new models for new car classes in the near future, suggests head of design Mesonero. “Here at Design, we are something like Seat’s dream factory and we have lots of ideas. And the better business goes, the more we can make it come true. "
