Silent everyday hero
The Audi RS4 enjoys cult status: in tests, the latest edition shows that a sporty station wagon can still impress.
Audi RS4
Regardless of the SUV trend, the Audi RS4 Avant is still often referred to as a father's dream. Due to the lack of ground clearance, it is not equipped for an excursion into the terrain, but otherwise it proves to be a veritable all-rounder in the test.
Thanks to a trunk volume of 505 to 1495 liters, it proves to be a talented relocation helper, thanks to five seats as a people transporter – and thanks to all-wheel drive it is directional stable and safe on the road even in pouring rain.
Above all, the sports station wagon is a surprisingly solid touring car. In times of Corona, the car is the means of transport of choice even for long distances; during the test period there were two long trips to Germany – where the RS4 was able to show off its full talent.
280 km/h would be possible on the motorways without a speed limit – but above all it is the knowledge of the power reserves that ensures relaxed travel. The 2.9-liter V6 with double turbocharging is not a nervous sports engine, but a sovereign worker. He shakes his 450 hp and 600 Nm out of his sleeve without unnecessary fuss and pushes the station wagon calmly but vigorously. That doesn't tempt you to speed excesses, but makes travel sublime.

Added to this are the suspension tuning, which is comfortable despite the 20-inch sports wheels, the good noise insulation and pleasant extras such as the powerful B&O audio system, the bright Matrix LED headlights and the standard massage seats. Even when driving at high speed, consumption barely exceeds 10 l/100 km; In everyday Swiss traffic, the RS4 drove with an average of 8.8 l/100 km – at least 0.4 liters below the factory specification. Measured against the driving characteristics and everyday talents of the sports suit, this is appropriate, if not sensational.
The same applies to the price: The Audi RS4 Avant costs from 102,900 francs; quickly and significantly more due to the Audi-typically long list of options. If you want to savor the sporty side of the station wagon on a regular basis, you should definitely budget another CHF 8,320 for the reinforced ceramic brake system. But: The RS4 has never been a cheap pleasure.
