SK Innovation builds battery cell factory in Jiangsu Province, China-innovation

In March 2018, the South Korean energy company SK Innovation, the country’s third largest company after Samsung and Hyundai, celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its electric car battery factory called “SK Battery Hungary” in Komárom, Hungary. This is located about 110 kilometers northwest of the capital Budapest. A good six months later, SK Innovation is expanding its business with electric vehicle batteries.

In China, the company has laid the groundwork for another battery factory to keep up with competitors like Panasonic, as well as CATL, LG Chem and Samsung SDI. SK Innovation has chosen Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, as the location for its own battery cell factory. The factory will be able to produce batteries with a total capacity of 7.5 GWh per year. We’re talking about 150.000 units of electric cars that can be equipped with these 50 kWh batteries.

In addition to the factory in Changzhou, the company plans to build a 20 GWh electric car battery production system by 2022 by extending the capacity of its work in Seosan in South Korean province of Chungcheong to 4.7 GWh and a 7.5 GWh battery plant in Komarom Hungary, which we have already mentioned earlier. With a joint venture in China, SK Innovation produces battery packs from the cells of the Seosan plant and sells them to global automotive groups such as Mercedes-Benz.

SK Battery Hungary is expected to be an important bridgehead for expanding the South Korean company’s business into the European market. The chances are not that bad: Audi, for example, wants to produce some of its electric car models and all the electric motors for its Stromer in Hungary. The Japanese car and motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki and the German supplier Continental are also not far from the new factory.
