SK Innovation invests US$353 million to build lithium-ion battery separator plant in China-innovation

SK Innovation will invest US$353.8 million to build a lithium-ion battery separator plant in China. The groundbreaking ceremony for the plant for the production of lithium-ion battery separators (LiBS) and ceramic-coated separators (CCS) in Changzhou in the southeastern Chinese province of Jiangsu is scheduled for early next year. Separators are considered a key component of high-performance EV power supplies that power electric cars.

The facility is scheduled to enter commercial production in Q3 2020 with an annual capacity of 340 million square meters of LiBS and 130 million square meters of CCS. According to SK Innovation. With the new production plant, SK Innovation will increase the production volume of the lithium-ion battery separator to 850 million square meters per year. The separators are supplied to battery manufacturers for electric cars as well as to manufacturers of information and technology devices.

The Chinese EV market has significant growth potential as Beijing ramps up production of green vehicles to reduce environmental impact. SK Innovation is currently supplying batteries to South Korea’s largest car manufacturer, Hyundai Motor Co. and its smaller subsidiary Kia Motors Corp.

In March, the South Korean energy company SK Innovation celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its electric car battery factory called “SK Battery Hungary” in Kom├írom, Hungary. In August, information became known about the construction of a battery cell factory in China. The factory will be able to produce batteries with a total capacity of 7.5 GWh per year. We’re talking about 150.000 units of electric cars that can be equipped with these 50 kWh batteries.
