Mlada Boleslav – Clear the start for the SKODA AFRIQ: With the name for the eighth SKODA trainee car, the 25 trainees from the current project year at the SKODA vocational school set two accents: The rally version of the SKODA KAMIQ city SUV, which was created in cooperation with SKODA Motorsport, is reminiscent to the legendary Dakar Rally in Africa. In addition, the name Skoda Afriq also fits perfect for another reason: Since the beginning of this year, Skoda Auto is responsible for all activities of the Volkswagen Group in North Africa.
In the development of eighth Skoda Azubi Cars, the vocational students work together for the first time in the history of the traditional project with Skoda Motorsport this year and benefit from experience from 120 years of motorsport. The rally version of the City SUV SKODA Kamiq, which for the first time serves as a zubi car, visually reminiscent of the vehicles at the legendary rally dakar. The roots of the traditional long-distance rally lying in the deserts North and West Africa.
The vocational students develop the spectacularly designed and handmade single piece of the first stroke of the art. The Afriq is 4.362 millimeters long and has a wheelbase of 2.649 millimeters. With the support of teachers at the SKODA vocational school, engineers and experienced employees from the Technical Development, Design and Production departments and, for the first time, from SKODA Motorsport, the trainees have implemented many new, unusual ideas. Team leader Zdeněk Stanke from the SKODA Academy emphasizes: "It’s great to see the enthusiasm and creativity with which our trainees are involved in this project. In cooperation with the subject teachers, who support our students with a high level of personal commitment and work meticulously with them on the details, the project participants implement ideas every year that surprise even the experts. The trainees always manage to give their personal dream car a unique character."
SKODA AUTO in charge of the Volkswagen Group in North Africa
The eighth SKODA trainee car also fits in with SKODA AUTO’s corporate responsibility for the North Africa region. As in India and Russia, the Czech automobile manufacturer is responsible for all activities of the Volkswagen Group in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria. Under the leadership of Arwa Oeljeklaus, the company has been developing. January 2021 new markets with growth potential. This project is one of the three top priorities EXPAND, EXPLORE and ENGAGE as part of the new corporate strategy ‘NEXT LEVEL – SKODA STRATEGY 2030’. Similar to India and Russia, we also want to contribute our know-how in dynamic growth regions on the African continent in order to efficiently leverage existing synergies for the Group."
SKODA experiences at the Dakar Rally
At the 40th. th edition of the desert rally in 2018, a KODIAQ was the first SKODA vehicle ever to take on what is probably the most demanding rally in the world. The large SKODA SUV was used in South America as a support vehicle for the Czech team BARTH Racing and mastered just under 10 without any problems in its production condition.000 kilometers through Peru, Bolivia and Argentina – partly at altitudes of more than 4.500 meters. In 2021, a SKODA 130 LR, a former factory rally car from the 1980s, took part in the Classic category of the Dakar Rally. It reached after more than 7.600 kilometers through Saudi Arabia and even celebrated a stage win and several third places.
Trainees at the SKODA vocational school in Mlada Boleslav have been planning, developing and building a spectacular concept vehicle every year since 2014. The AZUBI Car project is unique in the Czech Republic and offers tomorrow’s professionals the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and skills in cooperation with experts, among other things from the production and design business areas. This gives the trainees an insight into numerous different departments of the automobile manufacturer. You will learn to work in a team and on projects, to combine planning and practical implementation and to present your work to board members. The trainee car is one of the most important projects for the SKODA Academy and impressively demonstrates the high quality of training at the vocational school in Mlada Boleslav, which has existed since 1927.
