Skoda builds the more chic polo – the new savings petrol engine can do that

The fourth generation of the Skoda Fabia makes a big leap forward in many areas, only when it comes to electrification the Czech small car remains. For good reason.

"Electrification is too expensive in the A0 segement," says the head of the small series at Skoda and is frankly added: "That is why we had to play a bit with physics.“The physics lesson from Mlada Boleslav has the topic: consumption optimization through aerodynamics.
How Skoda optimizes consumption
The chapters come from the modern, well -known textbook at the Fabia and carry the headings: actively adjustable cooler blinds as well as aerodynamically optimized wheels and exterior mirrors. The variable slats of the radiator grille alone save at a speed of 120 km/h up to 0.2 l/100 km/h or up to five grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Together with subtleties such as the smoothest possible underbody and the small roof spoiler, a CW value of 0.28 comes out, which is 0.04 less than the predecessor and results in an average consumption with the 81 kW / 110 hp engine and the seven-speed double clutch transmission in an average consumption from 4.7 l/100 km. We needed 2.4 l/100 km more on our test drive.
Practice consumption is not yet convincing
As impressive as the wind slippery of the new Skoda Fabia may be, when driving you notice the missing electrification. Where else the electric machine intervenes, the inertia of the turbocharger shovels and the effects of the exhaust gas standards come into play when accelerating a quick acceleration.

Especially when you are traveling in the ECO savings program. You can counteract the phenomenon by pushing the automatic lever down and putting the gearbox on "S" as sporty. The other alternative is the sports driving mode that increases the basic speed level, but also the background noise and consumption.

That the Fabia 1.0 TSI after 9.6 seconds out of the stand The 100 km/h mark cracks and up to 205 km/h fast shows that with the small Czech polo you are anything but a rolling harassment. If you don’t constantly ask the 1339 kilogram Fabia to a full sprint with a hyperactive right foot, you are still brisk and relaxed. The comfortable chassis also ensures this. Speaking of: For 48-volt starter generators spoiled drivers, the start-stop technique could act a little more smoothly.

Skoda Fabia has grown significantly
But that is whining at a high level, especially since the fourth generation of the Fabia is clearly attracted in other areas. With a length of 4.11 meters (plus eleven centimeters), a width of 1.78 meters (pulse 4.8 cm), the Fabia pushes into the dimensions of a VW Golf IV. This is not only noticeable in the rear, where larger adults can also be accommodated for a short trip, but also in the trunk, which takes 50 liters with a volume of 380 liters than the predecessor. If you put on the backrests of the back seat, 1190 liters become.
The space available is properly photo: Skoda Driving report: Skoda Fabia – The stuff to the class leader
The fact that the Skoda Fabia IV is an adult vehicle is not only due to the grown dimensions, but also because of the modern technology. The digital 10.25 -inch combined instrument leaves little to be desired in the variability and information content and the touchscreen up to 9.2 inch tall informs the driver about everything important and also functions as a communication center.
Equipment and prices
In addition, there are new equipment details such as a heated steering wheel and a heated windshield, while passengers in the second row are happy about their own air nozzles. The processing of the interior is really neat and the materials are also. However, we sit in the top version "Style", which at least 23.390 euros costs.
Quality and driving comfort are as well as space available, connectivity and security Photo: Skoda Driving report: Skoda Fabia – The stuff to the class leader
Then there are helpers such as the front radradar assistant including the city emergency brake function and the lane keeping assistant. While the lane change and parking assistant (600 euros) costs surcharge, as well as disc brakes (150 euros) and the knee airbag for the driver and side airbags at the back (400 euros). A highlight in every Skoda are the Simply Clever extras that make life easier for the driver. "We live that," smiles Jiri Dietrich. In the Skoda Fabia IV there are 43 such features, five of which are Skoda premieres. This includes a clip in the center console to fix credit cards and the parking house ticket or a foldable sun visor for the panoramic roof.

In a nutshell
"Electrification is too expensive in the A0 range." The designer brought it to 3 … "Electrification is too expensive in the A0 range." The designer put it to the point. As a rule, small car buyers do not have so thickly filled wallets to be able to afford expensive electric cars. Politicians are withdrawn and arrogant on this point. One should rather put the incentives on the market that economical combustion engines come onto the market. I am convinced that today you would be able to do small cars with a realistic consumption of 3 liters (diesel) or. 4 Liters (petrol engine) to produce if the research capacities had been directed to consumption optimization instead of switching to the Stromer. The environment would thank us. But so: Which automobile manufacturer still operates research for engines that are no longer politically wanted?
Fun
Again a car with a 1 liter three -cylinder engine. They have emerged so often as the absolute masterpieces of engine construction. They drive through the area as a stone of the wise men worldwide. I mean that the designer of this work should be ashamed of drive to the ground. The manager who ordered this right away. They should get lifelong professional ban. Very serious. These engines, if you want to call them that, are neither economical nor durable nor do they sound like something and do not bring any other advantage for the customer. They are only cheap to produce. As I said, those responsible should be ashamed. Whoever buys something like this is to blame. Eyes open when buying a vehicle.
Sensational !
What is presented here again as a development. The engine is getting smaller and smaller, the car larger and heavier and of course correspondingly expensive but crammed with TW. Synbide technology. Today’s polo has long since overtaken the Gulf of all key data. Best BSP. Are the rims and tire sizes. the "explode" Likewise. Where’s the meaningful one "Lightweight construction" and as a result a reduced consumption ???
Innovation the 2.
Oh, I had forgotten something. When I read that … "That’s why we had to play a bit with physics". "Consumption optimization through aerodynamics" I should laugh or cry? Optimized, develops and builds cars for the NEFZ and WLTP? physics? The air resistance and extremely optimize it is commendable but for everything below 100kmh "almost" maginal! That is why a truck can also have such a huge forehead area and CW – because only 90kmh. Weight and rolling resistance are below 100 kmh and in constant starting and accelerating z.B City traffic the greatest factor in terms of fuel consumption. Likewise, the extremely bad flat share (especially in the city) of a 1l displacement Tenziner without DM below. Sorry but that has nothing to do with innovation and doesn’t get us any further
Innovation at it best
Really sorry. But a golf class Auto BJ 2021 used the 7.1l at 100km. 220g CO2 real consumption WTW. That should be the innovation? No electrically controlled slats do not bring any significant difference if it is moved in the city most of the time. And just like with the BEV, the consumption/range of the one on paper is unfortunately never true in real operation.
CW value 0.28
It’s a bit steep. Even the Opel Calibra had a CW value of 0.26 25 years ago.
The problem is ….
But that at least 1400 kg must be moved. With euiem three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with 999ccm! You shouldn’t be surprised at the not really fixed acceleration, nor about the real consumption! And how long will small -scale engine and high -rotating turbo endure? 100k km? 120k km? 200k km ?
That’s correct
But is still driven to the extreme if you have the Dacia "Bigster" or whatever the name is looking at. It is even bigger and heavier than the polo and also has a 1 liter three -cylinder masterpiece under the hood. For which every mechanical engineering graduate is ashamed of.
What does a small car have to…
…weigh over 1.3 t ? Practice consumption of over 7 l/100 km is no wonder if the cars are becoming increasingly difficult !
Euro 6 standard
The car obviously reaches 6d as described here. Euro 6 requires better CO2 values in relation to the weight of the vehicle?
