Skoda strikes a new direction – away from the uncompromising premium to affordable quality. The Skoda Kushaq shows how this will look. Site has already tested the crossover with which the Czechs in India want to conquer the market.

Skoda boss Thomas Schafer recently announced the strategy of the Czech VW subsidiary for the next nine years under the name "Skoda Next Level 2030". A central point is that Skoda no longer plays the premium card at all costs and thus puts VW on the pelle, but goes back to its roots. That means: affordable cars that may not always offer the last cry of technology, but still satisfy all the mobility needs of the customers. The beginning of this paradigm shift marks the new Fabia, which with an entry price under 14.000 euros around the buyer.

Skoda always wanted to be a premium – that’s over?

As easy as the Skoda strategists imagine, the change of course should not be too complete. After all, the Czechs took on the good act with the curse of good deed. Because cars like the Superb, Octavia or the Fabia are basically VWS in the other dress and at better prices. In addition, the spoiled clientele has got used to the premium ambience of the models from Mlada Boleslav. A step back into the age of the cheap plastic and steel rim atmosphere would probably not appreciate the buyers. On the other hand, it should also be clear that one for 14.000 euros no automatic climate automatic or full leather equipment gets.

The question now is how the Czechs want to do this balancing act. There are many answers to this in the Skoda Kushaq, a crossover with which the Czechs want to conquer the Indian market this year. This is not an easy task, since in the big country the struggle for the sales shares is led with hard bandages. So "inexpensive" must not mean "cheap", otherwise the shot will backfire. This resembles the task of the Skoda in Germany.

12.000 to 19.000 euros for the Skoda Kushaq

We go from prices of 12.000 euros to 19.000 euros for the Kushaq. So exactly the window in which the entry-level fabia moves. Already externally we like the crossover, whose name is derived from the word Kushak ”, which is king or ruler in the old Indian language Sanskrit, with the typical Skoda form language with a wide grille. In keeping with the rustic Kraxler look, there is an indicated underbody protection and black applications on the wheel arches. This crossover could also roll on German roads and would by no means be cheap.

The interior definitely falls into the same category as the exterior. With the ten -inch touchscreen, the ambience looks anything but shirt -sleeved. You can tell that the business model at Kushaq is very precisely calculated by details such as the classic handbrake. An electric parking brake would be simply too expensive. As you are used to by the Czechs, the interior is already well made with this prototype. In no way is being searched for, but the riser surfaces and the piano lacquer applications do not allow cheap home impression.

However, we certainly do not sit in a basic variant, more in a model with top equipment, as far as this can be said in a pre-series model. The automatic climate automatic is an unmistakable indication of this fact. But that levels off, since a Skoda beginner version in Germany will certainly be higher than on the subcontinent. So this equipment comes closer to a typical Skoda price breaker for the German market than will be the case on the Asian subcontinent.

Lots of space, but little horsepower

The 4.23 meter long Kushaq is already far ahead of the wheelbase of 2.65 meters, thanks to the wheelbase of 2.65 meters. In the second row you can make yourself pretty comfortable. To ensure that there is sufficient headroom, the designers have integrated extra outgrowth into the headlining. The trunk is properly dimensioned with 385 liters, if you change the back seat backrests, 1.405 liters from it. There are also a whole series of shelves in the interior that add up to a volume of 26.2 liters, including a large box in the center console. So you know from other Skoda models and will not change regardless of the price. The technical basis for the Skoda Kushaq forms a version of the modular crossbar specially adapted for the Indian market with the designation MQB-A0-in. The developers are very familiar with this architecture, which is also reflected in the driving behavior of the CrossOvers, which does not contain any major problems for the driver. Of course, the steering could be a little more direct, but we are moving a prototype that will be improved until the start of the series. The chassis offers a ground clearance of 155 millimeters and is comfortably coordinated, which is a good decision in the quality of most Indian roads. There are two TSI aggregates with 85 kW / 115 hp to 110 kW / 150 hp (with cylinder shutdown) to choose from. With us, the weaker variant in conjunction with the six-speed automatic system does its work and does not constitute an expansion of dynamics, but the developers should still lend a hand there too. Anyone who has now got an aqueous mouth must swallow a bitter pill, but still swallow. The Skoda Kushaq will not come to Germany, otherwise it would compete with the Skoda Kamiq. Nevertheless, this car looks deep – into the Skoda future.

  1. That’s how it looks…..
Original handbrake ? Well and at least works, even without tension. Since the one in India … should be sold, probably only needs a normal level "Gimmicks". Today’s boxes are overloaded anyway, at least in the lower price segment. Skoda is more likely to respond to the sprawling prices of "normal" Cars that slowly nobody can pay or want to pay. You will see what the competition in the "Dacia price class" blown -out ?!?

…You don’t have to worry about that secures the parked vehicle and loosens when driving off is something that I no longer want to miss.

So the strategy is the Skoda "no longer plays the premium card at all costs"…I missed something for the past 20 years? When was the Skoda please premium? The role is certainly not occupied by Skoda in the Volkswagen Group. And even outside of VW, Skoda is certainly not the epitome of Premium. Skoda builds decent cars for still affordable money, no more and no less. No longer play the premium card… A real laughter.

  4. Interesting !
Since we will never get a e -car anyway, this is an interesting model – not too much completely unnecessary frills and the rest at a reasonable price – that is exactly what is sought !

… hard language. If you will "never" get a "e-car", you will get one. In this respect, Forist Stadermann’s post is factually clear. The fact that he probably wanted to say the opposite and you misunderstood him is both times because of the crux "German language, difficult language".

That the manufacturers intentionally build burners who nobody wants to have anyway, and then say "The customer doesn’t want it", So out burner, thanks for your attitude, pfui. The same applies to electric cars, only that then politics controls who should drive what and when and the Anarchy knock on the door. You shouldn’t always dance to the nose of politics, because at some point the music is over and they are still dancing. Otherwise, honestly, if this is the future of combustion engines, good night, e-cars only last 8 years or burn before, do not know what the automotive future will bring, except for everything uncertain from politics and controlled. If the Greens have even more to choose, then the planet, started from Germany, can slowly dig a hole….

..The small cars based in India, including slimmed down safety equipment, is more likely to mark the luxury class. Why do you show the mobile German motor journalists? Perhaps to demonstrate that you can and want to market further burners outside of Europe. The fleet CO2 doesn’t matter. India? There was something in terms of CO2….
