eVTOL flier with eight propellers is to be used as an autonomously flying air taxi from 2025

SkyDrive SD-03: electric octocopter will be shown at CES-electric

The Japanese startup company SkyDrive is presenting an electric octocopter, an aircraft with eight electrically powered propellers. A prototype is now being made at the US electronics fair CES shown.

As an electric vertical take-off take-off and landing (eVTOL), the aircraft does not need a runway. As the pictures and the video (at the very bottom of this article) show, the thing is already flying, and manned, not just as a remote-controlled drone. SkyDrive has already received type approval from the Japanese Ministry of Transport – according to the manufacturer, an accolade that no other aircraft of this type has received so far.

The SD-03 is a demonstration model for a production model called SD-05, which is to fly autonomously and is intended as an air taxi. It should take off from parking lots or helipads on buildings, which enables door-to-door air traffic – as an alternative to the streets that are often congested in megacities, according to SkyDrive boss Tomohiro Fukuzawa. SkyDrive has not yet announced how many seats the production version should have. The SD-05 will not be presented until 2025 at the World Expo in Osaka.

The prototype is not yet able to make big leaps: According to the press release, the flight time is currently a maximum of five to ten minutes. The practical use is also limited, as the vehicle only has space for one person. But the octocopter only weighs 400 kilos.

The SD-03 will be presented on January 3, 2022 at CES Unveiled in Las Vegas, the CES preview event. However, only a miniature model is presented there. The plane can then be seen publicly and in full size at the "normal" CES from January 5th to 8th. Visitors should even be allowed to climb into the cockpit there.
