Even without a discount battle, you can get a lot of new cars for very little money. The class under 10,000 euros has established itself and is even surprisingly large.

D.Most of them immediately think of Dacia: The Romanian subsidiary of Renault shows how you can sell vehicles of many types for less than 10,000 euros. But the Romanians are not alone: In Germany there are more than a dozen cars of other brands that are below this threshold.

Cheap cars are apparently establishing themselves. This can be seen not only in the growing success of Dacia, but also in the plans of Nissan and Volkswagen: The Japanese are organizing a revival of Datsun as a cheap brand for Asian markets. Wolfsburg is also considering a new entry-level brand, although the vehicles will probably not be offered in Europe first and foremost. For the time being, only the Up small car at VW in Germany has fallen below 10,000 euros.

Dacia has achieved something unique

Dacia has initiated a new development for the industry expert Stefan Bratzel. "Dacia has set a new paradigm – from, bigger, more expensive, faster’ to, less inside and therefore cheaper ’", says the expert from the University of Applied Sciences in Bergisch Gladbach. For Ferdinand Dudenhoffer, Professor of Automotive Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Romanians are a prime example – and not just among the cheap brands. "Never before has a car brand managed to produce practically from zero to over 800,000 vehicles per year in less than ten years."

Apart from the SUV Duster, all of the Romanians’ models start for less than 10,000 euros. You have “everything on board that drivers need,” says Dudenhoffer – although the latest driver assistants and safety systems such as lane markers and spacers are left out. But the days when Dacia saved money by foregoing ESP are over.

Minivan just under 10,000 euros

In the case of the Dacia Sandero (from 6790 euros) customers stay in the four-digit price range even if they choose the 8890-euro Laureate II equipment variant with front side airbags, leather steering wheel and on-board computer. The new edition of the small car announced for January will be available from 6990 euros. And with the Dacia Lodgy there is for the first time a minivan for just under 10,000 euros. However, Lada has the cheapest off-road vehicle at the same starting price of 9,990 euros with the 4×4 in its range.

While Dacia belongs explicitly to the so-called "low cost car segment", which covers many types of vehicle, traditional manufacturers are trying to break the price with small cars. Fiat’s classic, the Panda, has been available from dealers for 9990 euros for years – including the current third generation. The basic model has a 1.2 liter gasoline engine with 69 hp on board. The more modern twin-cylinder gasoline engine TwinAir is only available in conjunction with the top lounge equipment at prices from 12,890 euros.

"New engines cost a lot"

That fits into the picture, because it is precisely the motorization that depresses prices. “What costs a lot are new engines,” says Stefan Bratzel. That is why the cheap homes are often not equipped with the latest generation of engines. However, drivers with the low-cost cars are comparatively environmentally friendly, because small cars naturally drive with small and therefore more economical machines.

"The fuel-saving effect also plays an important role in these cars," says Bratzel. On the one hand, it is about making the vehicles affordable for customers to maintain. On the other hand, small cars offer a good opportunity for manufacturers to meet CO2 limit values for their fleets.

Only 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers

To reduce consumption, Ford has even given the Ka’s 69 hp four-cylinder engine a start-stop system. The manufacturer specifies 4.9 liters of standard consumption and CO2 emissions of 116 g / km and demands at least 9800 euros for the three-door model.

With a combined consumption of 4.3 liters (CO2 emissions: 99 g / km) according to the manufacturer, the Peugeot 107 is even better off. At 3.43 meters in length, the three-door is around 20 centimeters shorter than the Ford and will cost a special offer from 8,490 euros by the end of the year. Its three-cylinder with a displacement of 1.0 liters develops 68 hp. The old starting price of 9,650 euros will apply again from 2013, says company spokesman Bernhard Voss. Technically almost identical are the Toyota Aygo (from 8990 euros) and the Citroën C1 (from 9450 euros).

Save with identical models

Chevrolet calls 9290 euros for its entry-level model Spark, but its equally powerful four-cylinder with an average of 5.0 liters consumes a little more (CO2 emissions: 118 g / km). The Chevy always has five doors – unusual for a small car – and the car is specifically advertised as a fully fledged five-seater.

Small cars from the Far East are available on the German market in price ranges between the regular 8,000 and 9,000 euros. Kia and Suzuki each ask for 8990 euros for their Picanto and Alto models. The Korean is powered by a three-cylinder with 69 hp, which requires 4.2 liters (CO2 emissions: 99 g / km). The Suzuki is in the list for the same basic price, the values for consumption and CO2 are slightly higher (4.3 liters and 103 g / km). Customers can save 500 euros if they pick up the Nissan Pixo, the technical twin of the Alto. For both vehicles, however, ESP costs around 500 euros extra.

ESP is standard at Volkswagen

The situation is different with the safety equipment of the small car family in the Volkswagen Group, which includes the Up (from 9975 euros), the almost identical models Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo (each from 8890 euros). The basic version of the 3.56 meter short car dwarfs is powered by a 1.0 liter petrol engine with 60 hp. ESP is standard on triplets. "And they are technologically up to date," says Bratzel. As an example, he cites the emergency brake assistant, which is unique in this car class to date, even if it is only available at an additional cost.
