Off to the core segment: Mini expands the Mini into a classic small car with five doors. Under the aegis of BMW, the Briton is gradually arming himself against cars like the Opel Corsa or the VW Polo.

M.Sometimes it takes forever to develop an idea. The British automaker even had plans to offer the Mini as a five-door model even before developer Sir Alec Issigonis unveiled the iconic small car with just three doors in 1959. But somehow there was always a lack of time, money or technical possibilities for implementation.

But now the time has finally come. In October, the small car will finally come on the market with rear side doors. Since BMW the Mini builds on a new, flexible platform, there was no question for Bayern that it would be extended because of its great success.

And the brand’s success – an impressive three million cars have been sold since the relaunch in 2001 – is set to increase even further. Because then Mini also plays in the most important segment and competes against classic small cars such as the VW Polo or Opel Corsa. In this class of five-door little ones, twice as many cars would be sold as in the previous core segment of Mini, says divisional director Peter Schwarzenbauer.

Stretched and yet chubby

But the developers have inflated the Mini properly: The wheelbase grows by a good seven, the length by sixteen centimeters to a regular 3.98 meters. The S versions even barely break the four-meter mark, a Mini has never been that long. The growth of the once really tiny vehicle cannot be stopped.

The side walls are also steeper, and the designers have raised the roof a few millimeters. The British advertise that knee and headroom in the rear have grown to a level that competitors such as the Audi A1 or the Citroën DS3 could not offer.

However, entry through rather narrow doors is quite difficult, and there is not much space for your feet under the front seats. But the trunk increases: Instead of 211, it now holds 278 liters. The extras include a height-adjustable loading floor and luggage nets.

The proportions change a little due to the new format, and in direct comparison with the conventional "hatch", the five-door looks a bit chubby. But the basic design line is also retained in the new one, seen from this point of view, the five-door model is also a typical mini.

Unchanged feelings

Well-known also under the sheet metal: like the three-door, the five-door starts with three diesels and three petrol engines. The entry point is marked by a three-cylinder, the Mini One with 102 HP and the Mini One D with 116 HP. Both 1.5-liter engines are also available as Cooper with 136 hp for the gasoline and 116 for the diesel. At the top are the four-cylinder engines with 192 hp in the Cooper S and 170 hp in the Cooper SD. This means that the new mini version reaches top speeds between 187 and 232 km / h and has consumption values of 3.5 liters of diesel to 6.0 liters of petrol.

The driving experience in the five-door is no surprise. The slight extra weight is at least not noticeable in the 360 Newton meters (Nm) of the powerful and a bit grumpy Cooper SD. After all, he manages the sprint with automatic in 7.3 seconds and comes to 223 km / h. And that the car with the slightly longer wheelbase lies a little quieter on the road and is perhaps not quite as manoeuvrable, that could also be imagination.

It is true that the hatchback is actually available as a five-door hatchback in mini history for the first time. But BMW did not completely ignore the backbenchers beforehand. The manufacturer installs a portal door on the passenger side of the Clubman, and the Countryman SUV variant is already a family-friendly car with five doors.

But these two body styles have a very special character that differs from the typical small car, and some of them are significantly more expensive. With a comparable engine, the Countryman is 3000 euros more than the three-door. In the case of the five-door model, on the other hand, Mini has a comparatively cautious pricing policy, starting at 20,600 euros for the Cooper and adding up to just 900 euros.
