You can tell at first glance how tight the seats are. Not everyone likes that right away, but sagging seats are not an issue in modern VW models.

A year later, the new BlueMotion with a three-cylinder engine and a consumption of 3.3 liters will also be available. In the meantime, there is also an economical BlueMotion model: E.According to the EU standard, s consumes 3.8 liters.

Almost no matter which criterion you use: the little one from Wolfsburg has what it takes to become a reference car in its class. The consumption is top, the workmanship is high quality, the driving comfort invites you to enjoy and the equipment variants offer the right thing for every taste. Only the price could tarnish the bliss.

S.o a lot of perfection is scary. We drove four different models of the new VW Polo, and we didn’t find any weaknesses in any of them. Well, the 1.6-liter TDI reaches its limits on inclines, and that also applies to the simplest petrol engines with 60 or 70 hp. But for free. Small cars also have to have weak engines that cost little, consume little and just get people from A to B..

VW has always cultivated this virtue, and among the currently seven engine variants for the new Polo there are also two or three less fascinating offers. Only: The car around it is exactly like that of the more powerful engines, namely almost perfect. One should be careful with such superlatives, but currently there is no other small car on the market that drives so precisely and offers so much comfort at the same time.

Just like the Golf in the compact class, the Polo is also preparing to set standards in driving comfort in the small car segment. The suspension is smoothly tuned without any tendency to rock, and the steering is extremely smooth without blurring the contact with the road. At the same time, the new engines run extremely quietly.

The new diesels, TDI engines with common rail injection were used for the first time, are downright beneficial, although it must be said that VW is only following a technological trend here. Other manufacturers have offered CommonRail for a much longer period of time, and many motorists have already benefited from the smoother combustion.

With the Polo, VW goes one step further, namely in reducing fuel consumption. The 1.6 liter four-cylinder diesel is available in three output levels, with 75, 90 and 105 hp. The middle variant can be combined with the so-called BlueMotion technology package and then consumes just 3.6 liters per 100 kilometers according to the EU standard. In a first test drive over about 50 kilometers of country road, the on-board computer showed 4.5 liters, which is quite a decent value in practice. Especially since the 75 PS version has to do without an automatic start-stop system and other BlueMotion ingredients and consumed one liter more per 100 kilometers on the same route – with significantly less temperament on the mountain and at the exit of the bend.

The most impressive innovation, however, is the next step in what is known as downsizing at VW: the 1.2-liter turbo gasoline engine with 105 hp. It pushes the Polo to 100 km / h in 9.7 seconds, allows it to reach speeds of up to 190 km / h and yet should only consume 5.5 liters – no more than the basic petrol engine with 60 hp and 1.2 liters less than one Comparably powerful engine in the previous model. The Polo 1.2 was so much fun on the test track that it was driven almost 100 kilometers and was challenged more than the two diesels – in the end the on-board computer showed a consumption value of 6.6 l / 100 km.

Those who order this highly recommended variant of the new Polo will have to wait until autumn and should use the time to save the purchase price. While the basic Polo with 60 hp is already available for 12,150 euros (including ESP), the 105 hp model already costs 16,325 euros. However, this also pays for the higher-quality “Comfortline” equipment, which, in addition to other details, also offers air conditioning. You should, however, treat yourself to the rear doors of the car (plus 735 euros) and the new dual-clutch transmission with seven gears for the engine. Not only because it is unique in the small car class, but also because it is simply fun to experience the almost always jerk-free gear changes.

Unfortunately, this pleasure costs a further 1400 euros, and since VW is proud to be able to offer many equipment details of the higher classes, it is possible to drive a VW Polo over 20,000 euros without any problems. Navigation system, Alcantara seats, light alloy wheels, panoramic roof, iPod connection – the Polo doesn’t lack anything if you can pay for the extras.

If you don’t overdo it, you can also be happy with Polo versions for 15,000 euros. The basic diesel costs 14,800 euros, the Polo with 85 hp petrol engine and high-quality high-line equipment (including light alloy wheels, parking aid) is available for 15,900 euros. How much the economical TDI with BlueMotion technology package will cost has not yet been determined.
