Smart is waiting for the restart. Developments are currently underway for the new smart generation, which comes from China in 2023. The Smart Fortwo has developed into a popular used car over the years. But not all versions are good for something.

After the former Daimler AG sold the Smart plant in Hambach to the new off-road vehicle manufacturer Ineos, an electrical smart fortwo is still manufactured and well sold in a wing of the production facility in order work. Nevertheless, many potential customers are waiting for the new generation that the new Mercedes Group founded together with its Chinese cooperation partner Geely is currently waiting.

New smart comes from China

But the Smart Fortwo has long since become a rolling legend since the late 1990s, because the former Swatch car offers more comfort than a scooter or a motorcycle and still finds its place in the city center in the smallest parking space. The Fortwo is therefore a coveted car, especially for beginners.

Used Smart: Large selection – still

But the good news in advance: Compared to many other models, the selection of Smart Fortwo is huge due to the long production period. The first generation models (1998 to 2007) are getting old and so for many of the successors manufactured until 2014 should be the right choice. The fortwo grew with the internal name 451 with the new creation from 2.50 to 2.70 meters, but it was more convenient, more comfortable and also used for routes outside of the inner city ring.

The inclined small car customer has the choice between an open and a closed version in Smart Fortwo II, which wear the names Coupe and Cabriolet somewhat confusing and are not in itself either of the two. Whether closed or open everyone has to know, but the supposed convertible variant is a mixture of Targa and a large fabric roll roof that drives electrically back and the tour through the city makes a little more relaxed because.

Better not than diesel

Of the diesel models, one should not make an arch by the pollutant classification and corresponding insertion restrictions in inner cities. The charged three -cylinder engine in the rear also rattles enough as a petrol engine, so that diesel feelings are not neglected. In view of its natural habitat in the city center, you are well served with every petrol engine and even the 61 hp basic version makes you rapidly on the road due to the empty weight of well, even if the automated manual transmission hardly satisfied any customers despite numerous revisions.

How much PS do you need in the smart?

The versions with 61 and 71 hp differ hardly noticeably in everyday life. The 84-hp version and the 102 hp Brabus variant not only make more good mood, but also shines with a significantly better equipment, which is noticeable in a significantly higher used car price.

There are also two electrical versions of 35 kW / 48 hp and 130 nm maximum torque of the second generation – built until 2014. The short-term maximum output is 55 kW / 75 hp, which increases to 62 kW / 82 PS / 135 Nm in the electro-brabus version. At 125/130 km/h maximum speed, the electric models are hardly slower than 145 km/h fast combustion models. The model maintenance in 2010 does not bring much new, but ensures that the previously inexpensive interior has a little more valuable on its maximum two inmates. If you want to choose a cheap smart fortwo, you should make sure that the mileage significantly below 80.000 kilometers and the equipment fits. Heated leather seats, automatic climate control and iPhone connection make life much more pleasant than in a barren base model with gray fabric chairs, steel rims and missing round watches.

Prices are mostly low, petrol engines are desirable

A well -kept Smart Fortwo Coupe Passion with 71 hp and just under 50.000 kilometers costs less than 5000 euros from 2010 and even well-equipped 84 hp versions with panorama roof are still below this brand. A cool Brabus Smart Fortwo Xclusive with matt lacquer and complete equipment is already available as a closed coupe version for less than 8000 euros. However, it should be noted that the petrol engines from Smart no longer build and thus become less common every day – another price slip is by no means safe.

The electric models of the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive are not more expensive. They also start with less than 75.000 kilometers in mediocre equipment at less than 6000 euros and should be the right choice for many city fans. They have to come to terms with the manageable reach, because more than 120 kilometers are hardly in reality and in winter it is difficult to make 100 kilometers even in winter. For this, the real maintenance costs are microscopic.
