Flexible, dynamic and in any case smart – these are the buzzword of the hour when it comes to accessories of any kind for electric cars. But how smart should my wallbox be actually? Must be able to communicate my electricity meter? And what risk do I have when my electricity price is changing every hour? Marion NOldgen, Germany boss of the digital eco-energy provider Tibber, explains the most important questions for e-auto drivers around innovative electricity products with all the advantages and costs.
The electricity meter
For e-car drivers charging their car at home, there are basically three types of electricity counters that can be used. Depending on the load equipment, KWh consumption and network operator, the choice is required or free, eligible or not eligible.
The “stupid” standard household current counter: Most households have installed an ordinary electricity meter without smart functions. Of course, it can also be loaded an e-car – but without the advantages of a smart meter. The only argument does not exchange him is avoiding costs and effort.
Controllable consumption devices: This is mentioned separate counters that are installed only for the charging process of the electric car. An important fact that is to be considered: These counters are always controllable from the network operator. The charging power can therefore be interrupted at certain times. For this, network operators offer reduced network charges for this setup, which is therefore approx. 2 to 3 cents per kilowatt hour reduced.
Intelligent Measurement (Smart Meter): A smart power meter sends information about your consumption in real time. This allows the electricity provider to settle according to the current price on the power exchange. With this interesting insights can be gained and there is a lot of savings potential – for example, if the electric car is then loaded, if by a lot of wind and sun power is in abundance in the network.
All consumers with an annual consumption of over 6.000 kWh, whether household or commercial, are required by 2032 for the installation of a smart measuring system. This usually applies to home households only on heat pump or e-auto owners. For these, there are currently only four certified gateways for intelligent measuring systems in Germany. Measuring point operators are legally obliged to inform consumers for three months in advance by post about the exchange. If the basic measuring point operator does not intend to replace the counter soon, a free measuring point operator can also be commissioned.
A wallbox is a charging device especially for E cars and is currently fully eligible (June 2021). In addition to the higher security, wallboxes have the big advantage that they can operate with higher charging services. Instead of 2.3 kilowatts – as with the household socket – even up to 22 kilowatt charging power are possible. This means that the car can be loaded up to ten times faster.
If you install a wallbox, 900 euros can be obtained from the state KfW Bank for purchase and installation. Prerequisite for the promotion is a supply of eco flow for the operation of the charging station. The charging power of the Wallbox may not be more than 11 kilowatts so that it is eligible – or it must be throttled accordingly.
The electricity tariff
Household Current Tariff: There is no separate tariff for loading an e-car. Who has a cheap, green tariff and wants to use it for his electric car, so it’s nothing in the way. But the same principle is considered as with the electricity counters: it does not make an effort, but there are no further advantages.
E-Auto tariffs: Here is a bit caution, because behind it is often a marketing mog pack as a real tariff tailored to the needs of e-auto drivers. In a real e-auto tariff, at least reduced network charges and favorable price windows should be offered over the day. In general, it is certainly worthwhile to compare the e-auto tariff with favorable household stows.
Flexible / dynamic electricity tariff: For a dynamic electricity tariff, the price per kilowatt hour changes every hour depending on the current price on the power exchange. This gives e-car drivers the opportunity to exploit low price hours, which often occur at night, for charging.
In Smart Charging, the electricity provider pushes the loading of the E-car fully automatically to the hours of the day in which the price is lowest. On average, e-auto driver with flexible tariff for purchasing price and smart charging about 200 euros a year.
With the right equipment, therefore, interesting information such as the monthly cost of loading, the charging period at home or the consumed kilowatt-hour can see. For this, e-auto driver need at least one smart wallbox that you can connect to the app of your electricity provider or connect your car to your electricity provider. The SMARTER the setup, the more data, analyzes and functions are available.
The conclusion – Smart current upgrade for E motorists a must
If e-auto drivers are charging their electric car at home and drive regularly, then it’s worth investing in a smart power upgrade. This is not only able to save money, but also benefits from the amenities of innovative technologies. Flexible sustainable electricity tariffs oriented to stock market prices are standard for charging operations in the next few years.
