Drive from A to B, only with the power of the sun? That works – at least a little bit. In addition to an interesting technology concept, the Sono Motors Sion offers a kind of super-Oko lifestyle as a business model. What can such a car? Site tested it.

For links on this page, Site receives. A commission from the dealer, Z.B. For marked. More info bisers often have to opt for two out of three criteria: high range, lots of space and small price. The Munich start-up Sono Motors wants to change that-with Germany’s first series solar car, the Sono Sion for only 25.500 euros before funding. After deducting the environmental bonus, the electric black minivan would hardly be more expensive than a VW Polo. Sono Motors Sion: Solar Stromer for everyone

Sono wants to achieve the low price through standardization and minimalism, among other things. What applies to Henry Fords Model T 100 years ago also applies to the Sion: The customer can have the car in any color as long as it is black. That decided at Sono the community, a 13.000-member community of fans, pre-orders and supporters. The decision was 52 to 48 percent in favor of the color black.

The black exterior is functional and is supposed to hide the 248 solar cells on the roof and doors of the Sion. By using solar cells, Sono saves the painting and elaborate and expensive pressing tools in production, which in turn presses in sales price.

Solar boost also in January

The solar cells should feed the batteries of the Sion with solar power and make it more independent of the socket or charging station. On average, the Sion should be able to drive 112 kilometers per month with the power of the sun, and there are even 245 kilometers in it. It is obvious that the production of solar cells is not as high in winter as in summer.

Solar power also in January

Nevertheless, the modules even produce driving stream in January: if it is cloudy, it is 28 kilometers per week, 84 kilometers in sunshine and an average of 42 kilometers. The polymer solar modules built by Sono should be lighter, more robust and cheaper than the glass solar modules that are known from house roofs. They should even be able to put them away.

The dimensions and proportions of the solar van also inspire more practitioners than aesthetes. The Sion is 4.47 meters long and offers five people comfortably space. The trunk is 650 liters in size and usable. Only a fairly high loading edge should disturb when loading large and bulky objects. However, the edge should become even flatter in the series, promises Sono spokesman Christian Scheckenbach.

If you get into the car, you immediately fall green plants Cut in the eye that stretch across the dashboard behind a transparent disc. Where there are expensive piano lacquer applications from other manufacturers, Sono Motors relies on nature. That is Iceland moss for filtering the air conditioning air intended. The rest of the interior of the Sono is simple and designed for expediency. How well processing and material in the series vehicle will be cannot be estimated on the basis of the prototype.

This is how Germany’s first solar van drives

Time for a short drive. At a small round around the Sono main seat in the north of Munich at speeds below the 50 km/h. The throttled prototype comes from the spot well enough, sporty driving performance a la Tesla cannot be expected with an output of 120 kW / 163 hp. The Sono is to be sealed at 140 km/h.

"The sion is a car that brings you from A to B", Sono CEO Hahn once said. Between A and B should not be more than 305 kilometers. This is the reach that the Sion can cover with a full load of its cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate batteries-without solar boost. With a maximum charging capacity of 75 kW, the 54 kWh batteries are filled again in less than an hour. Sono’s home loading box should enable bidirectional shop. This means that the Sion can not only load electricity, but also hand it over to the house, network or consumer.

Cars share with the Sono app

With his app, Sono wants to put pressure on the competition: the app can not only be loaded and control air conditioning, but also share the sion with friends and acquaintances. Particularly practical: With the SONO app, not only Sono cars can be rented, but also older cars from other manufacturers. Sono produces the Sion in a former Saab factory in Sweden. In the two-shift operation, 43 are said to be there per year.000 cars are built. Sono wants to deliver the first Sions in early 2023. However, you can’t buy the Sion yet, just pre -order.

  1. Oh well…
At least as an extension of the range on day trips. But I drive in the dark for 4 months … Work and back in the dark. Not exactly practical for workers in the night shift. Unfortunately, no sun seems to be in the parking garage or garage ..

  2. Car for whom actually ?
Exactly – for anyone ! And that’s exactly how it is sold. Looks nothing and technically a cucumber. One of the many start-ups that stay exactly as long as coal is present. Then they disappear together with their vehicles…..

  3. Oh please
I just have to look at this vehicle and know that it is not good for it and will not sell to the extent. Do you have no designers in your startup who understand your craft? People, the thing can be OKO as possible, if the design does not like it will be nothing. You don’t get overzealous start up, but not, right. Because you are completely blinded by your ideas. Save yourself a lot of suffering and grief and let it be. Some just have to put directly onto the glowing hob so that they believe that it hurts. Nothing against Start Up’s, many have implemented really great ideas. But the sion is an absolute stillbirth. The founders only hope that they will be bought and are fine. Everything else does not make sense. If it is just fine.

  4. The car was never designed for the masses
But I still agree with them, the Sion is practically dead because it will simply come too late and then too far if he still comes up with what I doubt what I doubt. 3-4 years ago I would have believed him in his niche a certain success. I know some who would have liked to buy it, but have now added to Tesla, VW and Hyundai.
