Above all, the Peugeot RCZ wants to steal customers from the Audi TT and the VW Scirocco. With a starting price of 26,450 euros, this project seems realistic.

The big disadvantage of sports coupes is usually the trunk. The Peugeot RCZ is an exception: at least 321 liters fit in here. If you fold the backrest, you can even stow a bike.

Peugeot discovers lust and passion in the compact class. Because kids are not everything, the French are finally bringing a sports coupe to the starting line in addition to vans and station wagons. The RCZ was developed to series production maturity in just two years, and the prices are also impressive.

S.Even when stationary, the 4.29 meter long and 1.36 meter flat two-door looks incredibly fast. Drawn by the young German designer Boris Reinmoller and built in a maximum of 17,000 copies per year at Magna in Graz, the coupe shines like the study once did with powerful proportions, wide flared fenders and, above all, the two brightly polished aluminum bars that stretch out like the struts of one Bend the dome over the cabin and catch everyone’s eye.

Once the attention is drawn, the eyes discover exciting details in every centimeter: from the newly designed brand logo in the hood to the small step in the window line and the rear spoiler, which can be extended in two stages, to the two bumps in the huge glass hood over the back seat.

Except for the wheelbase, the 2 + 2-seater has nothing in common with its 308 parts dispenser: 18 centimeters flatter but six centimeters wider than the sedan, with strong muscles around the wheel arches and on the flank, a wide open radiator throat and a crisp backside the RCZ puts an end to the boredom that weighs like lead on the French model range: a touch of Audi TT instead of an overdose of automotive gloom is the motto.

There is also an interior that also sets its own accents with extras such as the sports steering wheel, leather bucket seats, the new cockpit and the center console, which is inclined far towards the driver, and does not completely deny itself to everyday life. Even in the rear, the developers have therefore thought of the children and the cones and installed two emergency seats instead of a bland shelf. There is always enough space for the youngsters, and in an emergency it can temporarily accommodate two adults. The deep cavity of the trunk is also impressive: it has a capacity of at least 321 liters and the foldable backrest can be expanded so that the RCZ can even swallow a bicycle.

Unlike the old coupe of the 406 or the current two-door model of the 407, the RCZ not only looks sporty, it also drives like that. With a wider track and lower center of gravity, precise steering and a tight chassis, the flat Frenchman can be shooed down the country road with millimeter precision and is more fun than any other Peugeot since the legendary 205 GTI. A firm hand on the handlebars, a heavy foot on the gas, and a brave finger for the ESP switch: this is how you climb the Pyrenees at the RCZ like the rally-amazon Michèlle Mouton in the 205 GTI once did.

The best choice for this is of course the most powerful engine. Although it only has 1.6 liter displacement, it works with a turbocharger and direct injection and thus comes to 200 hp. Who also in the Mini Cooper S used four-cylinder, used four-cylinder properly spurs the spurs and never lets the rev counter fall below 3000 tours, not only hears a wonderful rumble from the resonance pipe, which is specially directed into the interior. You can finally feel the bite again. It is not for nothing that the RCZ in this version manages the sprint to 100 km / h with a maximum of 275 Nm in 7.5 seconds and almost scratches the 250 mark at 235 km / h, at which the speedometer ends.

If the 28,950 euros for the top model is still too much despite a price gap of 10 to 20 percent compared to the Audi TT, you can also have fun cheaper. Finally, there is the RCZ for the same price but with less consumption as a 163 hp diesel or with another 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 156 hp, with which the price drops to 26,450 euros. In addition, the consumption is of course better: If the 200 hp engine on the test bench treats itself to 6.9 liters and in practice sometimes twice as much, the second gasoline engine is 6.7 and the diesel even 5.3 Liters satisfied.

And that’s not all: After the RCZ was already at the fair as a hybrid study, the French are now seriously considering a series version of the part-time electric vehicle. With a diesel hybrid, as has already been firmly promised next year for the 3008, the engineers at the RCZ could kill three birds with one stone: They would not only reduce consumption, but also increase traction with the electrically powered rear axle. And that would bring Boris Reinmoller’s coupe a little closer to the model, the Audi TT – after all, it would even become a Quattro through the back door, so to speak.
