Whoever buys a station wagon usually needs a lot of space. Of all things, the new Volvo V60 can’t offer that – but it looks good.
M.ith the new Volvo V60, the Swedes will close a gap in the model range in autumn 2010 that some observers have probably not seen as such until now. The Swedish manufacturer is convinced that there is still space for another model with a luggage rack between the traditional V70 loadmaster and the V50 mid-range station wagon.
However, the new V60, which shares the base with the recently introduced mid-range S60 sedan, is less about loading volumes and other practical properties. Already the side view with the sloping roof line and the window area, which is becoming ever narrower towards the rear, suggests that form was given priority over function in the conception.
The new model wants to please with its sporty lines and an overall dynamic orientation. This is supported by the mediocre capacity of the luggage compartment of 430 liters (only 13 liters more than in the V50); and this is also supported by the fact that the V60 in Europe is equipped with a sporty chassis set-up as standard.
The engine range includes four, five and six cylinders from 115 to 304 hp. Engines such as the T6 turbo gasoline engine, which marks the top performance with 304 hp, or the new 2.0-liter turbo gasoline direct injection engine with 203 hp are suitable for dynamic positioning.
At the other end of the spectrum, the 1.6D DRIVe with 115 hp and 4.3 liters of diesel consumption per 100 kilometers should appeal to friends of particularly efficient locomotion. This variant will be launched on the market in early 2011. A total of five petrol and three diesel variants are available, two of which can be combined with all-wheel drive.
The Swedish manufacturer plans to produce around 50,000 units of the new V60 per year at the Torslanda plant, 90 percent of which are intended for the European market. There, the new sports station wagon, which will celebrate its public premiere at the Paris Motor Show at the beginning of October, will primarily have to deal with competitors such as the station wagon versions of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.
The prices for the V60 have not yet been determined, but will probably be between 1500 and 2000 euros above the S60 sedan. The S60 costs from 27,000 euros.
