Is it about electric cars for China or just a speedometer production?
Stellantis and the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn have decided on a strategic partnership. What the cooperation will be about tomorrow, Tuesday, at an online event announced according to the group.
Stellantis is the group from the merger between PSE (Peugeot, Citroen, Opel etc.) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). FCA had already confirmed talks with Foxconn on January 17th (PDF). At that time it was about a joint venture that was supposed to develop and build electric cars for China, but also deal with the topic of connectivity. However, an expansion of the cooperation was evidently already being considered at that time, because the cooperation was only to "initially focus on the Chinese market". At that time it was said that a formal contract would follow in the next few months. Now the time has apparently come.
Interestingly enough, the merger between PSA and FCA took place on January 16th officially closed, one day before the Foxconn cooperation was announced. Presumably, however, the PSA management under Carlos Tavares already had a say at the time, because it had been known since summer 2020 that the partners would join forces.
The cooperation should apparently help Stellantis to a better standing in China and a boost in terms of electronics / software / connectivity. For the company Foxconn, which also assembles most of the Apple iPhones, Stellantis, the fourth largest car manufacturer in the world, could become an important customer.
Foxconn could possibly also build complete electric cars for Stellantis, because after all, the electronics company from Taiwan has its own electric car platform called MIH. Foxconn will also manufacture the Byton M. , the Fisker Project Pear as well as the Faraday Future 91 in a joint venture with Geely. Also a possible cooperation with Vinfast is up for debate. Foxconn also wants its own solid-state battery by 2024 to develop.
In the beginning, the cooperation should only be about things like an intelligent cockpit and Internet services in the car, such as Bloomberg citing insider reports. Is this just the humble beginning of a wonderful friendship? Hopefully we’ll find out more tomorrow at the online event.
