The Chinese tech company Svolt Energy Technology, which has its European headquarters in Frankfurt and builds two battery factories in Saarland, has announced a partnership with the Autoconzern Stellantis. With its 14 brands, including Chrysler, Citroën, Fiat, Opel and Peugeot, Stellantis is one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers and mobility providers.
According to a current message from Svolt, Stellantis will also refer to Svolt from 2025 lithium-ion batteries. Svolt place Stellantis provides a wide range of product portfolio, from the battery cell to the high-voltage storage to the battery management system. Svolt wants to use its production capacities in China and future production capacities in Europe. Through the partnership, Svolt becomes part of the Global E-Auto Battery Procurement Strategy of Stellantis with more than 130 GWh to 2025 and 260 GWh to 2030.
Stellantis wanted to focus on two battery chemias to support various customer requirements: an option with high energy density and a nickel-based, cobalt-free alternative. Only a few days ago, the autocror on his “eV Day 2021” presented a comprehensive electrification strategy for the company’s brands. The strategy is based on four flexible E-car platforms with ranges of 500 to 800 kilometers, a scalable family of three electric drive modules and standardized battery packs to cover all brands and segments.
Only a year ago Svolt had announced to invest up to two billion euros in two production sites in Saarland. Planned are a state-of-the-art cell factory with 24 GWh production capacity in the final expansion stage as well as a module and pack factory. Overall, Svolt wants to create up to 2000 jobs.
Battery cell production with planned production start at the end of 2023 will be created near the Saarland village of uberherrn. It will reach 24 GWh production capacity in its final expansion stage, which is batteries for 300.000 to 500.000 E-cars per year. The module and pack factory is realized on an already industrialized terrain in Heusweiler, which is subjected to a retrofit for module and pack production. Here the production should start in mid 2022.
