An expansion of the charging infrastructure, as the federal government plans, could significantly accelerate the market success of electromobility in Germany. This shows a new study of the RWI – Leibniz Institute for Economic Research, which can be found here as PDF in English full text. Accordingly, additional charging points lead to a significant increase in electric cars, especially in densely populated areas. Quick charging stations should greatly influence the demand for electric vehicles.
An expansion of conventional charging points by ten percent, according to the study, leads to an increase in purchasing of e-cars by 5.4 percent. The effect of additional rapid loading points on the demand for electric cars could even be about four times the size, which value is associated with higher statistical uncertainty.
Also on the purchase of plug-in hybrid cars have additional charging points a positive influence. However, the effect is only about half as large – presumably because the partial circuits can also drive with conventional fuel and therefore less dependent on the charging infrastructure as pure electric vehicles.
How strong the demand for e-cars depends on the loading infrastructure, is very different, so the researchers: in densely populated areas, such as in the Greater Munich, in the Rhine-Main and the Ruhr area, enhance charging points the spread of electric cars clearly More than in rural regions. Also in areas with high fuel prices, the effects are larger. To subsidize the expansion of charging stations regionally, the effectiveness of the promotion could therefore greatly improve.
The RWI study is based on data from the Federal Office for Economics and Export Control to the funding program for electric vehicles, which was introduced in July 2016. The funding program should help to increase the number of electric vehicles in Germany by 2020 to one million. Even if the demand for e-cars and hybrid vehicles is currently rising, this goal has not yet been reached. At the end of the year 2020 were around 450.000 E car allowed in Germany.
“Our study makes it clear that the lack of charging infrastructure is an essential reason for the sluggish development of e-mobility in Germany. So far, electric vehicles have been subsidized to promote electromobility in Germany. If more in the expansion of the charging infrastructure is invested, the demand for electro cars could increase significantly. For the most effective promotion, however, it would be useful to consider regional differences in demand for e-mobility.”- Colin Vance, RWI environmental economist

We are currently stuck in a deep economic and financial crisis, which is still puzzled with much debt to the general election. After that you have to start collecting the shards and make the economic balance, and it does not determine it to distribute even more subsidies.
The support of BEV should therefore much more than today over higher gasoline or. CO2 prices are done. Charging columns must be a business like the sale of bread rolls or bicycles. As long as the state with subsidies “threaten”, with which later in the market incentive competition can spoil the prices, a self-supporting progress remains of the expansion of the charging points of course.
Car manufacturer pushes on a fast nationwide expansion of the charging infrastructure. The public sector can only support tax money. Should not. Private electricity suppliers offer outward prices until six times the household stream, which the customer can see or even should see later in the billing. The payment systems are too complicated in comparison with the EC card function. Only Tesla offers electromobility complete and comprehensive.
