Study confirms environmental advantage of e-cars - but eco flow is crucial-environmental

One of the most passionately discussed electric car topics is their environmental balance sheet. With the most turmoil, the “Sweden study” as well as those described by the Ifo Institute study of U.a. Hans-Werner meaning, since both argued with outdated numbers and often false assumptions and comparisons, and in retrospect to the last detail were torn and invalidated. There are now some dozen studies worldwide, which argue much more conscientious and closer to reality along the reality. And that is done throughout the conclusion that no way past the E-Auto.

The latest study on the comparative life cycle assessment of cars comes from Trier, from the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld of the university resident. Professor Eckard Helmers from the Department of Environmental Planning / Environmental Technology and its two co-authors Johannes Dietz and Martin Weiss have made their study based on conditions that the real world come as close as possible – and have raised as many data as possible. The result entitled “Sensitivity Analysis in The Life-Cycle Assessment of Electric VS. Combustion Engine Cars Under Approximate Real-World Conditions “was recently published.

Exciting we found the approach of researchers to dismantle a VW Caddy with 1,6-liter gasoline engine and rebuild with electric drive to be able to set as accurately as possible. The 26 kWh large battery of the conversion CADDY was manufactured as sustainably as possible using wind stream and loaded exclusively with eco flow in the usage phase. The result is such a small CO2 backpack that the electric car is in his climate battle already after only 17.000 kilometers off again and is on the road from there to more sustainable than the gasoline variant.

An electric car with twice as big battery with 52 kWh can according to the researchers its climate backpack when loading with eco flow after 20.000 kilometers (battery from wind power) or. after 35.000 kilometers (battery made of coal flow). How important the use of sustainably generated energy is, the opposite invoice shows: an electric car with 51.8 kWh large battery, which is charged with coal stream and charged the current mixer containing the current, also coal stream, makes its break-even only after 310.000 kilometers.

“It is very important where and with which electricity the cell factories are running,” says study leader helmers the industry service Electrive. He criticizes that these provisioning emissions are currently being ignored in EU legislation. “That must change with a holistic view of course,” said the researcher.

The researchers have in their study – here as a PDF to download – a whole series of interesting comparisons employed, for example the passenger kilometers covered and compared with other means of transport. Accordingly, the electric car in terms of eco-friendliness “under optimal conditions itself with public transport such as diesel buses, coaches and trains competitive”, the researchers write. There is only a motorized means of transport that is even more sustainable: the electric biscuit.

  1. So a fainting study:
Where is the energy consumption and pollutant emissions for the (consistently tempered) transport of oil pamp from the wellbore to refinery, for distillation of diesel and gasoline, transport to the tank ? Where the extracted solids (oil palettes) are reduced ?
On the other hand, everyone can order 100% eco flow at each electricity provider – if we all make this, then there is only eco flow in Germany ? Polluting loads can be discussed in Davos, especially if you are so committed as our Angi – agree on request date, all sign, finished. I wrote to the Christkind that I’m bison and I wish me a Tesla.

  2. I think now we agree that BEVs are more environmentally friendly than burners.
I also think that the burner riders and H2 advocates have already recognized, but in search of justification for their convenience and misconduct of their “stinge is horny” mentality at each straw brackets.

  3. 310.000km at coal flow / EU mix and approx. 50kWh battery? So I have a conservative bill with regard to the CO2 backpack for the battery for a Tesla MS 90D at EU-Circular Mix a Breakven of Ca. 70.000km calculated – for a comparable gasoline engine.

  4. If burns and H2 vehicles actually come as a whole with a CO2 backpack = 0 at the end customer, or someone knows trusted studies about it ? So you would have a comparison under all drive systems. Until then is always the speech from the CO2 backpack at the BEV’s.
Has electric car news.Net already made comparisons ? I also mean the transport costs of all items in the manufacturing factory ?
It is clear that Tesla unfortunately has still had to rock his cars over the Atlantic with unfortunately with diesel-operated ships to Europe, as the Giga Germany is not yet available. So far, a disadvantage for Tesla.

  5. The article shows how much energy is needed to make (52kWh) batteries.
In my view, it is not crucial to what kind of electricity is obtained:
The “green electricity” is more sustainable, is clear – so much should be generated as much as possible!!
Decisive is the energy mix achieved – in Germany, but actually worldwide.
Whether the existing eco flow is used for an Internet data center and coal flow for the battery production or vice versa, but changes to the entire emission balance (during this period) … nothing!

So you have to ask yourself: “What is the real climate balance with today’s energy mix – which car drive type is then in front?”
And on: “How does the energy mix actually develop in the next 5..10 years, D.H. the time in which the vehicles manufactured this year are operated?”

On the safe ecological site you always come with less power, weight (battery capacity). No matter what vehicle genus
That’s clear anyway and that can be found in the current study (battery size) again.
But it does not always need new studies ..

So politics and economy in Germany and the world make sure that the eco-electricity share is growing rapidly in the energy mix.
