The exquisite boredom of the VW Tiguan

Anyone who wants to drive an SUV should take a look at the new VW Tiguan – it is a perfect representative of its kind: modern, good-looking, spacious. But the car is missing something: sex.
E.It doesn’t happen that often at an advanced age, but I’ve learned a new German word: tiguane. At first I thought I had misheard, but then Thomas Treptow said it again: VW sold 240,000 Tiguanas last year.
And Treptow should know, after all, he heads product marketing for compact derivatives at VW – a difficult title, but more on that later. In any case, Treptow is something like the top Tiguan disciple in Wolfsburg, and in this respect its plural is almost law: Tiguan.
VW has sold 2.8 million of them since 2007, generation two is now starting, and because the first including facelift lasted around nine years, no sheet metal was left unturned in the new Tiguan.
Seat Ateca – The Spanish version of the Tiguan

The Ateca is not supposed to be a Tiguan competitor either, at least that’s what Seat claims. "With the Ateca we are primarily targeting models like the Nissan Qashqai," says Ulric…h Selzer, responsible for global sales.

The lines of the Ateca, on the other hand, are reminiscent of the in-house Leon. At 4.36 meters, Seat’s first SUV is about the same size as the first Tiguan. The wheelbase is 2.64 meters.

First of all, of course: the diesel engines. “They’re clean,” announced Karlheinz Hell, who has been responsible for all of the brand’s compact vehicles since April 1, 2016. There are now three other series managers in Wolfsburg (for small, for large and for electrically powered VW vehicles), and they should act like entrepreneurs in the company. The goal is nothing less than a cultural change – the board should no longer take care of every screw, every press photo, but should only be responsible for strategically important decisions.
Of course, this also includes giving managers like Hell the support of what they say about the cleanliness of the engines. However, this is not difficult in the case of the four TDI four-cylinder engines offered for the Tiguan: They are all certified according to the EU6 emissions standard and have SCR exhaust gas cleaning with urea injection on board – the cheat diesels that were blown in the USA come from the previous generation with EU5 and without SCR.
So when I carefully steer the Tiguan 2.0 TDI (from 33,925 euros) over an off-road course with a grumbling idle, then I really only have to concentrate on the route and not think about whether everything is correct under the hood. I don’t have to wrestle with the accelerator and clutch either, the on-board electronics take care of everything in conjunction with the dual clutch transmission.
The car even climbs down a flight of stairs
I can’t do everything with idle, but the steep incline is easy to negotiate for the 150 hp engine and all-wheel drive. Basically the Tiguan has no off-road gear reduction, but I can switch all influenceable systems (shift strategy, dampers, steering, etc.) to optimal off-road suitability using a rotary control in the center console.
You could of course also think about what to do with the car on sandy mogul slopes. This is, so to speak, a sheltered workshop, all kinds of VW instructors are ready to help, they have tested the route in advance, there is no real risk here – even if the small wooden stairs that I climb down with the Tiguan are very impressive.
But who will do that in everyday life? Even if he ordered Area View, the 890 euro all-round camera (including reversing camera), which really shows on the display everything that is happening directly in front of the front wheels and what you cannot even suspect from the driver’s seat. Great, superfluous technology, fate will hardly send the Tiguanas that will be sold off-road, but rather allow them to commute between the supermarket and daycare center.

At least that’s what I take from the experimental setup for this test: VW sends the motor journalists who have traveled through Berlin’s city traffic. A car rarely or never revs up here, and the trip is not subject to amusement tax either. But it is as realistic as it can be.
So let’s be clear: you sit a bit higher in the new Tiguan and enjoy good all-round visibility, even at an angle to the rear. If you sit in the back seat, you really win, because the car is now on the new Group platform MQB: This moves the axles eight centimeters further apart, which is really important in automotive engineering, and three centimeters more knee room has jumped out for the rear passengers – that is the difference between Easyjet and Lufthansa.
The trunk has grown by 50 to 520 liters, the loading sill has been lowered by four to 72 centimeters, and whoever pushes the rear bench seat 18 centimeters forward can use 615 liters of storage space – plus 1040 liters if the rear seat backrests are in a 60:40 ratio folded down and creates an almost flat loading area.
The design is less sexy than the Passat
We don’t need to go into any further detail, because everyone knew it anyway: the VW Tiguan is a solid and practical car. This is also what the new design exudes. While the very consistently horizontal front section looks more self-confident than before, and even looks almost aggressive, the rest of the car speaks primarily about family suitability. The crouched, wide body of the Passat goes perfectly with the strictly horizontal grill sections that VW designs today – the tall Tiguan looks much less sexy, it almost looks like a van.
But that will not diminish its success, because in its exquisite boredom it promises to be visually sustainable – a car that you don’t have to be ashamed of even after five, six or more years.
And technically he is of course absolutely up to date. The engines have good pressure for everyday use, they are neither loud nor quiet, and on paper they consume little – after the excursion into the terrain, I switched to a 2.0 TSI with 180 petrol hp (from 34,450 euros), the 7 , 3 liters is specified. The steering and chassis work inconspicuously to make it easy and comfortable for the driver, the quality is good, even if the trend towards hard plastic is noticeable below the dashboard. This is particularly unpleasant on the center console.

The electronics of the VW SUV, on the other hand, are almost at premium level. As standard, there is a radar sensor under the VW emblem in the radiator grille, and the sensor is also connected to the city emergency braking function as standard. What is new is that the VW radar can now also distinguish pedestrians from other obstacles and brake for them.
The multi-collision brake is also on board, it brings the car to a standstill after an accident if the driver can no longer do so, and there is also the lane departure warning. And for an additional charge, there is an assistant for practically every problem that you have not yet known.
This electronics offensive is also a symptom that the 2016 Tiguan will not roll up the market from behind as it once did – VW’s SUV is now an established bestseller that has to defend its position.
There are even more SUVs from VW
It does this through its enormous technical upgrade, its restrained design and with the help of the optical and actual growth (from 4.43 to 4.49 meters), which brings it closer to the large VW Touareg. The Tiguan thus also creates space for further VW innovations: Golf-sized SUVs based on Polo are expected within the next two years.
