The basic model now costs less than 40,000 euros
Tesla’s prices are and will remain erratic. Now the prices for the Model 3 suddenly lowered. The basic model Standard Plus, which cost 43,880 euros on January 11, 2021, is now available in the German configurator for 40,970 euros. That’s a whopping 3,000 euros less in one fell swoop.
As before, three versions are offered:
|Range||0-100 km / h||vMax||drive||Price on the left in the configurator||Price in the configurator on the right|
|Standard Plus||448 km (estimated)||5.6 sec.||225 km / h||2WD||39,990 euros||40,970 euros|
|Long range||580 km (WLTP)||4.4 sec.||233 km / h||4WD||49,990 euros||50,970 euros|
|performance||567 km (WLTP||3.3 sec.||261 km / h||4WD||54,990 euros||55,970 euros|
The price information is still in the German Tesla configurator confusing. The prices shown at the bottom left under "Transfer" are 980 euros lower for all models than the amounts shown on the right. The difference is apparently due to the processing fees, as can be concluded from the information from Tesla (using the example of the basic model):
Cash price 40,970 €
Incl. VAT of approx. € 6,541
Processing fees of 980 €
Incl. 3,000 € environmental bonus (net)
Apparently a net grant amount of 3,000 euros has already been deducted from the specified "cash price". This is the manufacturer’s contribution to the funding. In addition there are the 6,000 euros that you receive from the state. The prerequisite for funding a total of 9,000 euros net (i.e. 10,710 euros gross) is that the net list price of the car is less than 40,000 euros.
A look at the BAFA list of those eligible as of December 18, 2020 results in the following entries for model 3:
|No.||Manufacturer||model||BAFA net list price
|456||Tesla||Model 3 2020||39,990.00|
|457||Tesla||Model 3 2021||39,982.76|
|458||Tesla||Model 3 Long-Range Dual Motor AWD||48,555.00|
|459||Tesla||Model 3 Long-Range RWD||44,605.04|
|460||Tesla||Model 3 Performance Dual Motor AWD||57,546.00|
|461||Tesla||Model 3 Standard RWD Plus||39,395.00|
For the basic model, entries 456, 457 and 461 come into consideration (bold), because none of the others do not match the basic model Standard Range Plus. Accordingly, the basic model is less than 40,000 euros. The Long Range and Performance models are well over 40,000 euros. Nevertheless, an environmental bonus of 3,000 euros is also deducted for them in the Tesla configurator. Apparently, Tesla is increasing the manufacturer’s statutory subsidy amount of 2,500 euros by 500 euros.
Detailed information on the price increase is also available from the social media aggregator Reddit, where the user u / _airmax posted on January 20th:
Tesla lowers prices of the Model 3 in Germany
As of today, prices in Germany got reduced.
SR +: From € 42,990 to € 39,990
LR AWD: From € 52,490 to € 49,990
Performance: From € 58,490 -> € 54,990
(all prices incl. VAT)
With subsidy, the prices are as follows
SR +: € 33,990
LR AWD: € 43,990
Performance: € 48,990
Here are the new prices on the right. These also fell by 3,000 euros on the base model. The prices mentioned after funding are each 6,000 euros lower, which fits Tesla‘s information, but not our considerations.
Prices also fell in the other European markets on January 20th, as our American colleagues from site document with this picture:
Commentators on Reddit see currency effects as the reasons for the price reduction. But recently the dollar has weakened against the euro; you now pay 1.21 dollars per euro instead of around 1.11 dollars as a year ago; this corresponds to a strengthening of the euro by almost 10 percent. A strong euro could well lower the price of a car that has so far been produced in the dollar area.

In any case, the fact remains that the basic version became cheaper by around 3,000 euros in one fell swoop. What about the people who recently ordered the car at the old price? So that they don’t get angry, Tesla is apparently reducing the prices for them too. At least that’s what Teslamag reports, citing two buyers.
