These battery cells should offer 30 percent more range
Batteries of the type 4680 are actually only cylindrical cells with a diameter of 46 millimeters and a length of 80 millimeters, but if you tell a Tesla fan the number, their eyes will light up, because this type of battery is said to have an extremely high energy density and thus a range of around Increase 30 percent.
Tesla boss Elon Musk was recently asked what type of battery the Model Y will get, which is to be manufactured in Gigafactory 5 in Austin (Texas) – this plant is currently under construction, but should (similar to the factory in Grunheide) to be completed in 2021.
The Model S has 18650 cells, but the Model 3 and Model Y have 2170 cells. This cell type is used in both the Fremont production facility and the "Made in China" model in Shanghai. But the Model Y is said to have the new 4680 battery cells which is still under development and is only produced on a pilot scale.
When asked about the battery type of the Austin-made Model Y, Musk answered very briefly but also very clearly: 4680.
At the end of April, Elon Musk said Tesla had announced its first quarter earnings a small pilot plant for the 4680 cells with a capacity of 10 GWh per year, as Teslarati reported. But the cells are not finished yet:
"We have not yet reached a point where we believe that the cells are reliable enough to be installed in cars. We think we are close to that point. We already have the equipment for battery production in Berlin and Austin We are really on it. I am confident that we will achieve series production of the 4680 next year. "
You are about 12 or no more than 18 months away from mass production of the 4680 cells, Musk continued. After that, Musk still believed a month ago that the cells could at best be manufactured from spring 2022. Since the Model Y is to be manufactured in Austin by the end of 2021, there is a contradiction here.
If the cells in Austin are available from the start of Model Y, this could also apply to Model Y from Grunheide, which is also scheduled to roll out in 2021. In the German Tesla configurator, the expected delivery date for the Model Y is "End of 2021".
According to the configurator, the "Maximum Range" version should create 505 WLTP kilometers on one charge. We do not know whether the 4680 cells have already been taken into account. If not, the new cells could increase the range to 650 km – that would be the promised increase in range of 30 percent.
Also the second model from Austin, the Tesla Cybertruck, is to receive 4680 cells. The range of the top version (Trimotor AWD) is shown on the German Tesla website specified with over 500 miles according to the American EPA standard. That's no less than 800 km. Other models for which the 4680 cells are expected to be used are the Tesla Semi and the new Tesla Roadster.
