Tesla's Gigafactory 3 in China: construction completed by May '19-tesla

According to Teslarati, a Chinese government official said Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai is expected to be completed in May. They are also on course with regard to the construction and setup of the assembly lines for electric cars. These would have to be up and running by the end of the year so that production of the first vehicles can start as planned this year.

Information on the progress of Tesla‘s Gigafactory comes from Shanghai official Chen Mingbo, who currently serves as head of the city’s Economic and Information Technology Commission. During the annual parliamentary session on Wednesday, he presented the information in Beijing. Mingbo’s statement coincides with the time frame that Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave for the completion of the project at the beginning of construction. So everything indicates that the Gigafactory 3 can produce its first Model 3 at the Chinese plant before the end of the year.

China is known for fast construction, but even by the country’s standards, the Gigafactory 3 timeline is incredibly ambitious. For a fully-fledged car factory, you can count on about two years. But Tesla in particular has benefited from the support of the Shanghai government from the start. Signs of support include initiatives that helped the company secure low-interest loans from local banks to build the facility, and involvement of a state-owned construction company in the construction of Gigafactory 3.

With the Gigafactory 3 and the associated production of its own models on site, Tesla will be able to compete with local manufacturers of electric cars without being burdened by additional taxes and duties. Therefore, the Gigafactory 3 can certainly be seen as a key element in Tesla‘s growth plan for China. The facility will also be purpose-built to produce affordable versions of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV.
