The Audi Q5 e-tron is to become the technology twin of the Porsche Macan-technology

Audi and Porsche are jointly driving the development of the new Premium Platform Electric architecture, or PPE for short. According to the trade journal Autocar, one of the first Audi models to use the new basis will be the SUV Q5 E-tron, which will be presented in 2022. The Audi electric SUV is to be the sister car of the electric version of the Porsche Macan that has already been announced. Much like the case with Audi‘s new e-tron GT, which shares its base with the Porsche Taycan. As is the case with those two cars, Porsche’s electric Macan is set to go on sale a few months ahead of the Audi Q5 e-tron.

The market launch of the Q5 e-tron is scheduled for 2023. It then bridges the gap between the imminent Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback, which uses the VW Group’s MEB platform, and Audi’s flagship SUV, dubbed e-tron for short, which is a modified version of the SUV -Architecture MLB of Ingolstadt uses. The PPE platform on which the Macan and Q5 e-tron are to be built is a further development of the J1 platform that Audi uses for the e-tron GT and Porsche for the Taycan.

Audi recently revised the top-selling Q5. The mid-size SUV is now available with both mild and plug-in hybrid drives. It’s not yet clear if Audi is planning a third generation of the Q5 or if it could be completely replaced by the all-electric Q5 e-tron, Autocar said. Although the upcoming electric SUV from Audi shares the technical basis with the Porsche Macan, the two vehicles should differ significantly in terms of design. Compared to the current combustion engine Q5, the electric Q5 e-tron is said to be significantly sportier.

It can be assumed that the Macan and Q5 e-tron will have the 800-volt battery layout that the Taycan and e-tron GT already have. The two upcoming electric cars should be able to be charged with an output of up to 350 kW. The range of the two PPE twins should be a good 500 kilometers.

  1. Something “new”… The Kuh 5 and the Macan have always been almost identical vehicles. In this respect, a really superfluous contribution.
