Nissan Ariya: Up to 500 km WLTP
The Nissan Ariya was presented in July 2020 and should "be available from the second half of 2021". Five variants have been announced; the longest range should create 500 km according to WLTP. Instead, the car has an 87 kWh battery, which is a bit disappointing: the Ford Mustang Mach-E has a battery of a similar size and covers 610 km. However, in February Nissan said the range target will likely be exceeded; in addition, it is not known whether the stated capacity is a net or gross value.
The longest-range version has a front-wheel drive with 178 kW and 300 Nm. This means that the car should sprint to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds. Nissan gives the drag coefficient with (little record-breaking) 0.297.
- Base price: not yet known
- Drive: E-motor at the front with 178 kW and 300 Nm
- 0-100 km / h / top speed: 5.9 sec. / N / a.
- Battery / range: 77 kWh / 500 km WLTP
- Charging: up to 22 kW AC, up to 130 kW DC
- Dimensions / empty weight: 4.59 meters length / n / a.
- Market launch: 2nd half of 2021

Tesla Model Y: Up to approx. 505 km WLTP
While Tesla really sets standards in terms of range with the Model S (more on this later), the mid-range SUV Model Y has now been overwhelmed by development. The longest-range version called "Maximum Range" (or Long Range in the USA) only manages 505 km according to WLTP. The value is estimated by the manufacturer, there is still some time before the market launch in Germany: Production in Grunheide is scheduled to start in mid-2021. In the USA, however, the car is already on the market.
The 505 km version of the Model Y has all-wheel drive and should sprint to 100 km / h in 5.1 seconds; otherwise Tesla is keeping a low profile on the technical data. A special feature is that the Model Y will optionally also be available with seven seats.
- Base price: 59,600 euros ("maximum range" with all-wheel drive)
- Drive: 2 electric motors, system output 245 kW (according to Wikipedia)
- 0-100 km / h / top speed: 5.1 seconds / 217 km / h
- Battery / range: N / A / 505 km WLTP ("Maximum Range")
- Length / height / empty weight: 4.75 meters length / 1.62 meters height / 2,003 kg (according to Wikipedia)

Kia EV6: Up to 510 km WLTP
The maximum range of the Kia EV6 was specified at the presentation with 510 kilometers according to WLTP. That should refer to the 168 kW version with rear-wheel drive and the large 77 kWh battery.
At 510 km, the car is one of the top 20 electric cars with the longest range. At 4.68 meters in length, the car is almost as long as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, but not as high at 1.55 meters. You could also classify the car as a station wagon or hatchback sedan – the boundaries are fluid.
- Price: Not yet known (58 kWh version from 44,990 euros)
- Drive: 1 rear electric motor with 168 kW and 350 Nm
- 0-100 km / h / top speed: n / a / n / a.
- Battery / range: 77 kWh / 510 km WLTP
- Charging: 10-80 percent in 18 minutes
- Dimensions: 4.68 meters long / 1.55 meters high
- Market opening: autumn 2021

Audi Q4 e-tron: Up to 520 km WLTP
The Audi Q4 e-tron can travel up to 520 km according to WLTP. The corresponding version is called the Q4 40 e-tron and has the large 77 kWh battery from the modular electrical system (MEB). The well-known 150 kW rear engine provides the drive.
With a Sportback body, the drive would have to provide even more range because of the better aerodynamics, maybe 540 km would be possible. But of all things, the Q4 40 e-tron is not available in this body variant. Pity!
- Base price: 47,500 euros (Q4 40 e-tron)
- Drive: 1 PSM rear with 125 kW
- Battery / range: 77 kWh net / 520 km WLTP
- Electricity consumption: 16.3-17.3 kWh / 100 km
- drag coefficient: 0.28
- Dimensions: 4.59 meters Length / 1.61 meters height
- Market opening: June 2021

VW ID.4: Up to 522 km WLTP
The versions of the VW ID.4 with the greatest range are called ID.4 Pro Performance and ID.4 Life. Both can cover 522 km on one charge and, of course, have the large 77 kWh battery. The cheaper of the two models is the Pro Performance at a price of 44,450 euros.
The 4.58 meter long SUV based on the modular electrical construction kit (MEB) has a 150 kW rear engine. The basic version Pure with 109 kW has a lower power consumption of only 15.4 kWh / 100 km (instead of 17.2 kWh / 100 km with the Pro Performance). But because of the small 58 kWh battery, it doesn’t get that far for a long time.
- Base price: 44,450 euros (ID.4 Pro Performance)
- Drive: 1 rear electric motor with 150 kW
- Battery / range: 77 kWh / 522 km WLTP
- Power consumption: 17.2 kWh / 100 km WLTP
- Recharge range: 320 km in 30 min at 125 kW DC (5% SOC, WLTP)
- Length / height / empty weight: 4.58 meters / 1.64 meters / 2,124 kg

Skoda Enyaq iV: Up to 537 km WLTP
At the presentation in September 2020 it was said that the Skoda Enyaq should manage up to 510 km according to WLTP with one charge, but this value has since been corrected to an impressive 537 km (536 km is still in the configurator). This makes the car currently the compact SUV with the longest range – at least if you classify the larger Ford Mustang Mach-E in the middle class.
The version with the greatest range is the Enyaq 80 iV with 150 kW rear-wheel drive and the large 77 kWh battery, which is also used in the VW ID.4. Skoda specifies the power consumption in the configurator as 16.7 kWh / 100 km.
- Base price: 43,950 euros (Enyaq 80 previous year)
- Drive: rear electric motor with 150 kW and 310 Nm
- 0-100 km / h / top speed: 8.5 seconds / 160 km / h
- Battery / range: 77 kWh / 537 km WLTP
- Electricity consumption: 16.7 kWh / 100 km
- Length / height / empty weight: 4.65 meters / 1.62 meters / 2,090 kg

Polestar 2: Up to 540 km WLTP
The Polestar 2 was initially only available as a 300 kW four-wheel drive. It wasn’t until April 2021 that the front-wheel drive versions were added to our list of the best. The variant Long Range Single Motor (yes, the versions are called similar to Tesla) should create up to 540 km according to WLTP. This version has 170 kW of power and the well-known 78 kWh battery.
The range is 40 km less than the Tesla Model 3 Long Range (with all-wheel drive). But the Polestar 2 LRSM is also cheaper: It costs just under 45,000 euros, at Tesla you pay 50,970 euros, whereby the manufacturer’s share of the environmental bonus of 3,000 euros net has already been deducted.
- Base price: 44,930 euros (long range single motor)
- Drive: 1 electric motor at the front with 170 kW and 330 Nm
- 0-100 km / h / top speed: n / a.
- Battery / range: 78 kWh / 540 km WLTP
- Length: 4.61 meters
- Trunk: 405-1,095 liters plus 35 liters "Frunk" (front trunk)

VW ID.3: Up to 549 km WLTP
With the large 77 kWh battery in the Pro S version, the ID.3 manages an impressive 549 km according to WLTP. This version costs 41,995 euros. A rear-wheel drive with 150 kW is then on board.
VW specifies electricity consumption as 15.9 kWh / 100 km. In the consumption test, our economical driving Italian colleague Fabio achieved around 17 kWh. The ID.3 Pro S is charged with up to 11 kW alternating current or 125 kW direct current. With 11 kW, a complete charging process takes about 7:30 a.m., VW does not provide information on the charging time with 125 kW on the website.
- Base price: 41,995 euros (ID.3 Pro S)
- Drive: 1 rear electric motor with 150 kW
- Battery / range: 77 kWh / 549 km WLTP
- Electricity consumption: 15.9 kWh / 100 km

Tesla Model 3: Up to 580 km WLTP
The notorious range king Tesla just made it into our top ten list with the Model 3: The version with the longest range (called Long Range) manages 580 kilometers on one charge.
The Model X in the "Maximum Range" variant gets exactly as far; we didn’t include it here because we wanted to limit ourselves to 10 models. Tesla is very economical with the specification of technical data, for example there are traditionally no performance specifications.
- Base price: 50,970 euros (long range, including 3,000 euros manufacturer’s share)
- Drive: all-wheel drive with 100 km / h sprint in 3.9 seconds.
- Battery / range: n / a / 580 km WLTP
- Recharge range: 275 km in 15 minutes on the Supercharger
- Length / height: 4.69 meters / 1.44 meters

Tesla Model X: Up to 580 km (estimated)
The Model X is basically a luxury class coupe SUV. There are two versions in the German configurator: "Maximum range" with an estimated range of 580 km and "Plaid" with 547 km. A "Plaid +" version like the Model S with a range of over 800 km is apparently not planned. This means that the maximum range is no greater than that of the Model 3 – which is a little disappointing.
The "Maximum Range" version has all-wheel drive and accelerates to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds. The PLaid version sprints significantly faster (2.6 seconds), but doesn’t get quite as far. In general, the Model X offers space for up to seven people. The rear wing doors are among the special features and eye-catchers.
- Base price: 96,970 euros ("Maximum range" version)
- Drive: all-wheel drive with 2 or 3 electric motors
- Range: 580 or 547 km (estimated, without standard specification)
- Length: 5.04 meters

BMW i4: Up to 590 km WLTP
With 590 km according to the WLTP standard, the new BMW i4 comes just ten kilometers further than the Model 3 – certainly more than mere coincidence. BMW has beaten Tesla in the middle class, even if only minimally. Disadvantage: the car will only be on the market at the end of 2021.
The car is based on a combustion platform, namely that of the upcoming 4 Series Gran Coupe. Otherwise little is known. So there is still no information about charging. We only know that the most powerful version (probably an i4 M Performance) will have 390 kW of power and sprint to 100 km / h in 4 seconds. BMW should reveal more details in April.
- Base price: not yet known
- Drive: up to 390 kW
- Range: up to 590 km WLTP
- Length: approx. 4.65 meters
- Market launch: end of 2021

BYD Han: 605 km NEDC
Another car with a range of around 600 km, albeit in the NEDC cycle, which Chinese manufacturers usually use to indicate the range. The Han (like the Tang, for example) belongs to the so-called dynasty line of the large Chinese BYD corporation and bears the name of a ruling dynasty that ruled over China around the time of Christ’s birth.
The chic body was designed by the German designer Wolfgang Egger. Both the version with 160 kW front-wheel drive and the 197 kW all-wheel drive should achieve 605 km according to the NEDC. There is no information about charging. The car has been on the market in China since last summer, but it should also come to Europe – probably first to Norway, where the seaweed has already started.
- Base price: 279,500 yuan (equivalent to about 36,000 euros)
- Drive: 160 kW front-wheel drive or 197 kW all-wheel drive
- Range: 605 km NEDC
- Length: approx. 5 meters
- Market opening: July 2020 (in China)

Ford Mustang Mach-E: Up to 610 km WLTP
The Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s only electric car, apart from the e-Transit delivery van. But the car is convincing in terms of range: up to 610 km should be possible with the large "Extended Range" battery (99 kWh) and 2WD drive. In addition to the large battery, the decisive factor here is the low power consumption of less than 17 kWh / 100 km according to the NEDC.
It is charged with up to 150 kW; so you should be able to recharge a range of almost 120 km in ten minutes. In our charging test (see link below), however, the 150 kW were only reached for a short time; after that, the charging curve quickly fell. The charging process from 20 to 80 percent took 40 minutes.
- Base price: 51,180 euros (promotional price according to the configurator, Extended Range 2WD)
- Drive: 1 rear electric motor with 218 kW
- Battery / range: 99 kWh / 610 km WLTP
- Power consumption: 16.5 kWh / 100 km WLTP
- Recharge range: 119 km in 10 minutes with 150 kW DC

BMW iX: Up to 630 km WLTP
We just had the BMW i4, which beats Model 3 in terms of range, here comes the iX, which leaves Model X behind, and in a similarly close manner: The Tesla achieves 580 km in the "Maximum Range" version, BMW gives 630 km at. Here, too, the specifications for the developers shine through: Apparently, the car should beat Tesla.
We compared it with the Model X, also because the Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQC lag far behind in terms of range. The drive is interesting: BMW uses two separately excited synchronous machines (FSM). That could explain the very low power consumption, which together with the large 105 kWh battery explains the long range. The market launch is in November 2021.
- Price: 98,000 euros (iX xDrive50)
- Battery / range: 105 kWh / 630 km WLTP (iX xDrive50)
- Charging: in 35 min 10-80% (iX xDrive50)
- Drive: all-wheel drive with 385 kW
- Length: 4.95 meters

Tesla Model S: Up to 652 km (estimated, without standard specification)
The Model S Plaid + announced in December 2020 with a range of 837 km was canceled by Elon Musk via tweet in June. The Model S Plaid can do 628 km, but the version with the greatest range is the Model S Long Range with 652 km.
Two motors provide the drive, the standard sprint should take 3.2 seconds. The car should cost just under 100,000 euros, but delivery to us should not start until the first quarter of 2022, according to the configurator.
- Price: 87,970 euros (Model S Long Range)
- Range: 652 km (estimated, without standard specification)
- Charging: up to 250 kW DC
- Drive: all-wheel drive, speed 100 sprint in 3.2 seconds.

Lynk & Co Zero: Up to 700 km (without standard specification)
The Zero from the Geely-owned manufacturer Lynk & Co is so far only a study, but it looks close to series production. The basis for the car is the Sustainable Electric Architecture (SEA) from Geely. So the car has an 800 volt system, which leads to very fast charging.
With a length of almost five meters, the car has upper-class dimensions. This fits in with the promised range of up to 700 km, because long haul is the domain of such luxury-class vehicles. There are currently no statements about a market launch in this country. It’s a shame that would be a great Model S competitor.
- Base price: n / a.
- Range: 700 km (without standard specification)
- Drive: presumably all-wheel drive with a 100 km / h sprint in under 4 seconds.
- Length: 4.95 meters

Xpeng P7: Up to 706 km NEDC
And another China model. The Xpeng P7 is 4.88 meters in length between Model 3 and Model S. Three batteries are available, the largest stores 81 kWh and should allow the "RWD Super Long Range" version a range of 706 km in the NEDC cycle.
One of the special features of the P7 is that the P7 will soon be launched in Norway, and an expansion to other countries is apparently also planned.
- Base price: 254,900 yuan after funding (approx. 33,000 euros) for RWD Super Long Range
- Battery / range: 81 kWh / 706 km NEDC (RWD Super Long Range)
- Charging: 31 min DC (30-80%)

Lightyear One: Up to 725 km WLTP
The Lightyear One is exotic, which you can tell by looking at it: The covered wheels at the back will probably only accept electric nerds. Like the Mercedes EQS, the Californian strart-up manufacturer Lightyear also relies on aerodynamics.
The drag coefficient is below 0.20, which is a little better than the EQS. In addition, the car has five square meters of solar cells, which could provide electricity for around 60 km a day. The battery is small at around 60 kWh, but the power consumption should only be an almost unbelievable 8.3 kWh / 100 km; that would only be about half of what the best EQS version needs.
- Base price: approx. 179,000 euros
- Drive: 4 wheel hub electric motors, torque vectoring
- 0-100 km / h: 10 sec.
- Battery: approx. 60 kWh
- Range: 725 km WLTP
- Power consumption: 8.3 kWh / 100 km WLTP

Mercedes EQS: Up to 770 km WLTP
The Mercedes EQS was presented in April. One of the special features of the 5.21-meter-long sedan is its aerodynamic shape, which sets a new production car record with a drag coefficient of 0.20 and is also one of the top 5 in terms of drag coefficient. Therefore, the version with the greatest range manages 770 WLTP km.
Not all details about the drives are known yet, but two batteries (90 and 108 kWh net) and a 245 kW rear-wheel drive (EQS 450+), a 385 kW all-wheel drive (EQS 580 4Matic) and a performance Version (still without system performance information, probably the expected AMG variant).
- Base price: not yet known
- Drive: 245 kW, 385 kW and a more powerful version (possibly AMG), rear or all-wheel drive, exclusively PSM machines
- Batteries: 90 and 108 kWh net
- Range: up to 770 km WLTP

Lucid Air: Up to 830 km EPA
Another big electric sedan, not from China, but from California. The Air from Lucid Motors in the Grand Touring version is supposed to achieve 500 miles or 830 km according to the American EPA standard – that is an impressive figure. There is also a 900-volt system with which the car can charge extremely quickly. A charging capacity of 300 kW should be feasible – with the Taycan "only" 225 kW are possible. In a 20-minute break from driving, you should be able to recharge the Air with a range of almost 500 km.
The car thus combines a princely range with extremely fast charging. For this, the advised price of just under 140,000 euros is cheap. Let’s hope Lucid sticks to those numbers and that the car actually comes to us by the end of 2021. A little skepticism is appropriate, as a market launch for 2019 was already promised.
- Base price: $ 161,500 (Grand Touring, equivalent to approx. 137,000 euros)
- Motors: 2 electric motors with 486 to 1,090 hp
- Range: up to 830 km (estimated value for EPA standard)

Nio ET7: Up to 1,000 km NEDC
With a promised range of 1,000 km, Nio is number one in our ranking. 1,000 km – that sounds almost like a Far Eastern fairy tale. Even gasoline and diesel vehicles rarely achieve such ranges. The most economical Mercedes S-Class (350 d) according to the NEDC standard manages 1,048 km with its 286 PS diesel and 65 liter tank.
A new solid-state battery with 150 kWh and a very high energy density should make the range feat possible. The market launch for the ET7 should be at the end of 2022, but then with smaller batteries and less range. For the time being, the fabulous 1,000 km will remain a dream for the future.
- Base price: not yet known
- Drive: 1 electric motor (PSM) at the front with 180 kW, 1 electric motor (ASM) at the rear with 300 kW
- 0-100 km / h: 3.9 seconds.

Aptera 2: up to 1,600 km (without standard specification)
Is the Aptera an electric car? We think it’s one, but a very unusual one, one for nerds. And it only has three wheels. The manufacturer prefers to call the vehicle Never Charge Vehicle because, thanks to the solar cells, you can cover up to 70 km a day without ever charging the battery. The extremely good aerodynamics (drag coefficient = 0.15) and the correspondingly low power consumption also contribute to this.
Nevertheless, the vehicle can also be ordered with a large 100 kWh battery. And with that, the Aptera should cover up to 1,000 miles, i.e. around 1,600 km. As announced, we are gradually expanding our collection of the electric cars with the greatest reach. Most recently, the Audi Q4 e-tron with a range of 520 km and the new "Long Range Single Motor" version of the Polestar 2, which covers 540 km. We had to downgrade the Model S because Elon Musk canceled the top version with a range of 837 km.
At the lower end, we previously added the cars with a range of over 500 kilometers, such as the Tesla Model X, the VW ID.3 and ID.4, the Skoda Enyaq, the Kia EV6, the model Y and the Nissan Ariya. In the upper area, the Mercedes EQS, the Lightyear One and the Aptera 2 were added.
The list is arranged in ascending order according to range, so we start at 500 km and work our way up to the range king.
It also includes models that are not yet on the market in Germany or that are not yet available anywhere. We have also recorded some exotic species, but not (yet) the Faraday Future FF91, which should cover more than 700 km, but whose realization is by no means certain.

Even if the range is one of the most important parameters of an electric car – it is not everything. In a city car, a range of 100 km is actually enough, a small battery can be quite useful here. And even with a smaller battery you can cover long distances – namely when you can charge quickly. A Porsche Taycan, for example, can be brought back to 80 percent in 22.5 minutes; then again about 380 km are there.
But that’s not the point here, it’s just about the range, which is often referred to as "the new displacement". Why? Well, because you can show off with it. When someone at the regulars’ table says: "With my diesel I can go further than with an electric car like this", then you can give a contra with a number that will surprise many a mobility enthusiast by burning chemicals.
