Stylish Stromer with the best manners
Hyundai‘s electric Ioniq 5 is a real eye-catcher. But its inner values are just as impressive.
The exterior design of the Ioniq 5 is reminiscent of compact car classics such as the VW Golf 1 or the Lancia Delta.
This is exactly how women and men imagine an electric car of the latest generation: avant-garde design that does not require frills, with smooth surfaces, retractable door handles and with a few corners and edges that characterize the design language of modernity. This is exactly what our test car looks like, the Ioniq 5 First Edition from the South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai. This design is also a real eye-catcher on the road, as it stands out pleasantly from the sea of random SUVs.
Like the other electric cars
According to the manufacturer, the Ioniq 5 sets standards in the redefinition of electromobility. Well, that’s how the in-house marketing swaggers like to see it. As already mentioned, the Korean differs visually from the competition. Technically but hardly. The crossover utility vehicle (CUV), which costs almost 60,000 francs, does not behave much differently than the other electric cars currently on the market. At 605 Newton meters, it has a generously dimensioned drive force. This is easily transferred to the road thanks to a chassis that is well matched to the all-electric all-wheel drive train and due to the properties of Hyundai‘s new E-GMP platform. Or to put it another way: The Stromer from the Far East looks handy, offers the best comfort as well as space and driving culture.

With the energy reserve of the 72.6 kWh battery, however, things go downhill relatively quickly, especially on long motorway journeys in winter. The 430 km range of the 306 hp (225 kW) electric vehicle listed in the documents is pure wishful thinking, especially when the outside temperatures are low. For us it was between 350 and 380 kilometers. However, Hyundai is in good company with other electric car manufacturers. On the other hand, the Ioniq 5 can be recharged relatively quickly – thanks to the 800-volt on-board network. After 30 minutes, we have over 200 kilometers more on the range display at a 150 kW charging station – at a station with more power it would be even faster in the Hyundai. The multi-stage recuperation system (energy recovery), which is operated via the steering wheel paddles, does a great job.
Space in abundance
The Ioniq 5 offers plenty of space and storage space. Feat: at around three meters wheelbase. And the interior presents itself like the exterior – that is, just as futuristic as it is elegant. Driving data and navigation and infotainment instructions are displayed on wide screens, analogue instruments were yesterday. What is positive: Even strong sunlight cannot harm the monitors. They always remain legible. However, it is less clear that the view of the instruments through the steering wheel (depending on the setting) is miserable.

Lots of extras included
Of course, the Ioniq 5, like all other Hyundai models, comes with a wide range of equipment at no extra cost. These include an augmented reality head-up display, an automatic parking and parking function with remote control, a motorway and traffic jam assistant and traffic sign recognition with automatic cruise control. The extras also include a lane departure warning system. But there is still room for improvement with this system. This is because the electronics need a certain amount of time before they have leveled off in the middle of the lane and during this time noticeably defend themselves against steering interventions by the driver. And there is still plenty of room for improvement when it comes to voice recognition.
