So far, the Peugeot 308 could hardly beat a VW Golf. But as an R-Hybrid, the compact can even take on sports cars. The launch control for the ultimate extra boost makes it possible.

E.a Peugeot test drive on a racetrack? That I don’t laugh! The times when you had to go into closed-off terrain with the French are long gone. Tamed by the rigid austerity course of the PSA group, the developers of the Lowen brand are now as toothless, adjusted and cautious as their successful colleagues in Wolfsburg or Seoul and only pack mainstream into the tin.

Even the CC convertibles have no successors. Not to mention cars like the 205 GTI T16 from 1984 with its turbo engine mounted in front of the rear axle.

Driving is just too cheap

But has everyone really become sensible? Not quite. Because a small but influential troop in Paris puts up bitter resistance to bean counters and people of reason: Peugeot Sport is the name of the department that has just 130 engineers but builds the most fascinating cars in the whole company.

Up until five years ago they put the Le Mans racers on their wheels, they built the winning car for Sebastian Loeb for the hill climb on Pikes Peak, and last year the team developed a buggy that raised a lot of dust at the Dakar Rally.

Strong is not strong enough

Only the customers have noticed relatively little of this so far. Because compared to the racing car, the current 308 GTi is very tame – even if 272 hp make it the most powerful production model in the company’s history to date.

But now the athletes are once again going overboard with a calculus and whet the appetite for a car that is as unreasonable, as fascinating as the blissful 205 Turbo from the eighties. 308 R-Hybrid is the inconspicuous name of the project.

His cooler looks like an angry grimace. The fenders are wider than on some muscle cars, and the rear is wide.

But the bodybuilder dress is no coincidence. After all, there is a drive underneath that has never been seen at Peugeot: the 1.6-liter turbo with 272 hp is supported by two electric motors, each with 115 hp, and heaves the otherwise well-behaved compact, which itself is the Golf GTI can hardly keep up, to a level of performance known from Porsche & Co..

Electric calm before the storm

Even if the top speed is limited to 250 km / h with regard to the speed of the electric motors, Porsche drivers will be amazed: The prototype, which was shown for the first time at the Shanghai trade fair in spring, needs to sprint from 0 to Tempo 100 less than four seconds.

At least for the first few meters, this 308 is electric. And those who pull themselves at the belt can even manage 15 kilometers on one battery charge, so the engineers promise. In theory, this pushes the standard fuel consumption of the racer to 3.0 liters and takes away the guilty conscience of the driver.

On the racetrack, such information is of course wasted. With the inconspicuous button in the center console, I wake the 1.6-liter engine from its forced break. I am in hybrid mode for the first few meters. In the Peugeot this means: The combustion engine takes over the drive power, but with small power kicks that act like electric shocks, the electric motor plugs the turbo lag and compensates for the interruption in tractive power when shifting.

I glide around the course more smoothly than with any dual clutch transmission. But that’s just the foreplay. It really gets down to business when I press the sports button on the steering wheel. The rear engine pushes powerfully. We are already a bit closer to the Porsche league with just 400 hp.

500 hp are now activated

The fun continues as long as there is enough power in the batteries. And because they suck in juice every time you brake, the three kilowatt hours (kWh) of battery capacity can go a surprisingly long way.

But wait a minute! Didn’t Monsieur Le Ingenieur promise me 500 hp? When I stop briefly at the start-finish straight, the project manager switches off the ESP and activates launch mode. For the perfect cavalier start, the 308 now turns with a deafening roar while standing at 4000 revs, the front wheels rasping over the asphalt until the rubbers are hot and have enough grip. Then the electronics let the clutch click, the R-Hybrid chases away as if from a catapult.

Going from 0 to 100 in less than 4.0 seconds – that has never happened before in a Peugeot. Now at the latest I also know why the armchairs in the front of the show car are cut so low and why two suggested bucket seats are even mounted instead of the back seat.

Peugeot Sport has done without the usual electronic gadgets such as torque vectoring – with care. Because the 308 is perfectly balanced and, with its wide track, lies like the proverbial board on the asphalt.

Does he come or does he not come?

After all, even when the ESP is off, all you need is a strong hand on the steering wheel and a nimble foot on the pedals to keep the lion on a leash and guide him around the course on a short strap. Chapeau, I haven’t had that much fun in a Peugeot for a long time.

There is only one catch: Because more than the show car from Shanghai and a development car that is not quite as fluffy, the R-Hybrid does not yet exist. But the fact that the sports team is still allowed to work on the cars nine months after the debut of the trade fair model is a hopeful sign for the upcoming series production. If Peugeot finds a formula according to which a small series could be produced and sold somewhere between perhaps 50,000 and 75,000 euros unit price, it should in any case not be up to the engineers.

The chief developer at least says that the coordination work could be finished in one or two years – in time for the facelift of the 308.
