The Swiss knife for e -car drivers – with a juicy price

If you have a mobile charger in the trunk of your electric car instead of a simple loading cable, you can load almost any power source. Practical, but not quite cheap, as a test shows.

Even if the network of charging stations grows: if you are traveling a lot with the electric car, you have to be able to improvise and be flexible, especially when driving abroad. Mobile charging stations help to be able to use all available power sources as possible-from the camping socket to the Danish household socket. One of the most diverse devices on the market is the Juice Booster 2 for around 1.000 euros, which, in addition to travel utensil, is also a flexible replacement for the domestic wall box. A test.

The portable wall box of the Swiss company looks as simple as robust during the first contact. The core element is an almost 25 centimeter long, very massive-looking metal cylinder with LED scale that contains the charging technology. A type 2 plug heads from one side (alternatively there is also a type 1 connection), the opposite cable ends in a metal coupling. There the currently required of the supplied or purchasable adapter is included. A process that works with great lightness and mechanical elegance. Even with clammy cold fingers or in the dark, closing and solving the connection does not cause any problems. Juice himself developed the convincing closure – an effort that ultimately contributes to justifying the relatively high price of the booster.

That’s how it works

Only a single button is intended for the further use of the mobile charging station. It sits on the metal cylinder and primarily allows the current to be adjusted. Although the device also recognizes the amp value that can be called up to the respective power source, but on request it can also be selected a lower selection via short button pressures. For example, if there are other consumers on the same circuit. For safety reasons, the current strength cannot be higher, so accidental incorrect operation is therefore excluded. If you hold the button of the cylinder, you can also adjust the loading mode. This allows the device to be adapted to other electricity network architectures, for example to the British that does not know any grounding. There is nothing more to do when using the booster. Once inserted, a red LED running light shows the ongoing charging process, a green LED indicates its conclusion.

The manufacturer apparently wanted to keep the operation and use as simple as possible. He does not use further setting options, WLAN and Bluetooth connection or an app connection. After all, there is a cutting provider for load management, so that several booster can also be operated intelligently at the same time.

Security against theft

On the other hand, safety technology is extensive: in addition to automatic power adaptation and an overheating sensor in the Schuko adapter, there is a dust and waterproof housing that can even be run over with 3 tons of wheel load. A FI switch is also assembled; It recognizes incorrect flows up to 30 mA (AC) and 6 mA (DC) and then switches off the device. The Booster also prevents the subsequent manipulation of the set charging current by third parties, and if you want to secure the adapter cable against theft while charging, you can do this with a separately bought padlock. As usual, the vehicle -side connector is firmly coupled by car via the central locking and cannot be stole.

Different household plugs for different countries

The showpiece of the Juice Booster is definitely the large number of adapters. There are different sets in stores with a different number of plugs. In addition to a Schuko household connector, the blue CEE16 connector, which fits the cans on campsites, is usually included in the scope of delivery, as well as one or two red CEE plugs with 32 or 64 amps, as are often available in commercial properties or on construction sites. Depending on your needs, further endpieces can be bought, starting with household plugs for France, Italy or Switzerland (even the USA and South Africa) to numerous, also exotic industrial plugs to special e-mobility plugs, including in addition to the rare type 3-model also the common type 2 variant. It allows the Juice Booster to be used on public charging stations or wall boxes. The normal fashion 3 cable does not have to be dragged along. The emergency charging cable is obsolete by the booster anyway.

Against this background, the rather high weight and the voluminous scope of the mobile loader can be excused. The base device weighs around one kilogram on the scales, together with the cable, two to three adapters and the supplied transport case, four to five kilograms come together quickly. The bottom line is not much larger than that of the usual charging bag with the two standard cables.

Expensive fun

If you stay in the home environment, you can also hang the booster on the wall by means of a bracket that can be ordered from the manufacturer and use it so comfortably as a solid wall box. Alternatively, Juice also offers the so-called “Charger Easy 1”, with which the booster can be upgraded to the quasi-festivaled wall box, including intelligent load management and 11 kW throttling. Then the overall package also qualifies for KfW funding of 900 euros. If you want to take the booster with you, you first have to loosen a few screws.

However, a bit of a purchase aid from the state cannot hurt from the customer’s point of view, because with a basic price of almost 1.000 euros for the basic version with two adapters, the booster is relatively expensive. Opel currently offers the device its new car customer under the name "Universal Charger" for 720 euros. Further adapters are available for the standard model and the variant with Opel logo from around 70 euros per piece, the bracket for 70 euros and the eligible "de-mobilized" variant for completely 1.200 euros. In return, you get something like the Swiss knife for the e-mobilist. A wall box for the garage, which helps at the same time with charging, where at least somewhere there is a current cable in the ground somewhere.

  1. Grant no thanks!
"However, a bit of a purchase aid from the state cannot hurt from the customer’s point of view, because with a basic price of almost 1.000 euros for the basic version with two adapters, the booster is relatively expensive." Is there only a single reasonable and understandable reason why the taxpayer should support environmental fixed on four wheels? If you are willing to spend horrendous money for such a car.
