The Swiss makers: Hyundai brings hydrogen truck to Switzerland-hydrogen

From Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer is not handed down if he – like his party friend and ministerial colleague Horst Seehofer – likes to play train. However, the opposite is to be feared. While the former Bavarian Prime Minister in the basement of his vacation house in pubic features of trains can be circulated on various levels, it depends scrubbing on parts of the A1 and A5 trucks on top lines. The in the Altmuhltal makes it safe for fun, with the highways it supposedly serious.

So slowly, the ruler in Berlin seems to be a little queasy. Finally, Germany has expressly known for emission-free mobility by 2050. Among other things, in the Climate Agreement of Paris. Unfortunately, however, it is not done with a signature. From the promise of Chancellor, already 2020, a million electric cars were surprised over the streets of the Republic, is nothing left.

For the CO2 balance that is devastating. On top of that, someone has to raise the question at some point, as in the future all the cars should be on the road, which transport heavy loads around the clock? Since 1990, freight traffic has more than doubled on the road. By 2030, another 40 percent increase is expected. And because Scheuer the train has always been thrilled since has always been the model, he kept copying the model to the road to the road with him so beloved road. Million grants included.

The idea: On the usual diesel engine, an electric motor is flanged, there are batteries on the tractor. And: Above the cab, electricity collectors protrude as with a locomotive. You hold to Tempo 90 contact to the car wire with about 600 volts. The additional technology weighs to the two tons. For freight forwarders no real problem. As a rule, they encounter the border at the volume, rarely in weight. Rather, it’s the price you shudder. The prototypes still cost about triple a commercial truck. In return, according to Siemens, a 40-tonner can save about 20,000 euros to 100 000 kilometers, according to Siemens.

And there are not only rides on the wire. The carrier can store energy for three more kilometers away from the upper line for three more kilometers away from the on-board batteries. Therefore, in Berlin, it is already hardworking. According to the Ministry of Environment, about 70 percent of the flow of goods flows to 3000 to 4000 kilometers of the highway network, one could cover a large part of this traffic with 1000 kilometers of electrification.

In Switzerland, you are on: these days Hyundai has shipped the first ten hydrogen truck “Xcient Fuel Cell” for the multi-week sea voyage direction Alpen Republic. After arriving in Bremerhaven you will be further transported and handed over in early October. The precious freight is the world’s first produced heavy commercial vehicles with fuel cells. By the end of the year, it should be 50 until 2025 then already 1600.

Unlike comparable models, the “Xcient Fuel Cell” is not a study, but a serial lifer vice. For propulsion, two fuel cells with 95 kilowatts each provide. The seven tanks on board bring a 34-tonner with cooling structure 400 kilometers. Even in Swiss topography. And that is just the beginning. Parallel, Hyundai already develops a tractor with a range of 1000 kilometers for long-distance traffic.

Why, however, the pilot project starts in the face of the EU hydrogen strategy in Switzerland, which just not belongs to the EU? Answer: The Swiss Eidden were simply faster. Mark Freymueller, Chief of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility: “When the project was planned a few years ago, the ‘Green Deal’ was not yet foreseeable.”Well, the model of future CO2 taxation – and the clear will of politics. Because during the country of diesel is subsidized here, the costs are significantly higher in Switzerland. And the chances for changing bigger. Freymueller: “The savings through control path in emission-free trucks are so high that fuel cells are a real alternative.”

Generally, Hyundai examines an expansion of the model to other countries in Europe. The interest is great, says Freymueller. Many potential customers would have reported. But the political frameworks make little hope. “As long as this is not addressed, a project of this scope in Germany is much harder.”

In this case, EU climate Commissioner Frans Timmermans praises the fuel cell. Hydrogen based on renewable energy is not only climaster, he says, but also growth engine in the corona crisis. If the “Green Deal” would resort, could be covered by 2050 a quarter of EU-wide energy demand with hydrogen. Today it’s two percent.

The view to the neighbor, however, shows the system change helps much faster than just talk about it. Or play road train.

  1. In contrast to the cars where you can live with the battery weights, it is different at the truck. Even with the tractors the energy requirement is too big, for agriculture, H2 is therefore a topic. Airplanes hold up to date with battery technology for an hour in the air.

  2. Already 50 years ago, Switzerland was also a test market for the first cars of the Japanese. Nissan still stood there then Datsun and impressed with the Bluebird . But Toyota and Honda also delivered a very new dealer network with small workshops in the countryside, solid cars with complete equipment. Through their disposable assembly on their bands, without interim storage and aftertreatment they became
Against Europeans also for the price competitor. The Koreans want to do the same?

  3. That’s definitely the truck-zunk! Please no “remaining confidential” of the still beautiful landscape on our highways with expensive and ugly overhead line systems! Also for ships in the Norwegian fjords, where they are already prohibited from 2026 diesel drives, for trains, etc., Etc. FCelectric drives are suitable. Later certainly for travel cars. The BEVs then ideally reserves the urban short-distance traffic. So everyone can live … and the Taconic and similar senseless over 300 km / h of fast road viticles can be kept and should be kept in bridle with astronomical prices. Coming soon we (and Somalia?) Probably an official 130 km / h Limit, which is practically because of the many traffic jams already below (cars are easy too cheap).

  4. H2 for heavy traffic yes clear. For cars not affordable and above all not enough producible. If H2 CO2 is to be neutral, it takes at least three times more green stream than it needs for BEVS. This is completely unrealistic, they are already almost no new plants possible with the resistances in the population and politics.

  5. Yes could be a conjunctive. It is certainly not wrong to dream, and I do not want to say that it will never happen.

But so on the whole, nothing changes, as long as nothing happens and what should happen?

The rail is already clogged, my hometown has received a small Contian terminal for inland waterways, which hardly needs … unfortunately
I think that’s all too slow, too inflexible, there it takes quite new approaches, otherwise staying at the truck, sry

And tempo 130? I do not see that this comes. Ok vll automatically, if actually all are electric. Is not necessarily necessary in its totality.

  6. The CO2 balance and energetic efficiency of a H2 fuel cell truck is devastating! There is only a relocation of the CO2 emissin from the road to the power plant.
Since the demand for electricity higher than the regenerative electricity offer, this will probably remain the next 20 years, the regenerative defect will probably be covered caloric fossil. There are no regenerative surpluses, but a distribution deficiency. As long as the regenerative body is present, there is therefore fossil or atomic origin for each KWH electricity used in Europe for H2.
The consumption of 35KGH2 for 400km gives (8.75kgh2) 35L diesel equivalent per 100km with 92kg CO2 emissions Each 100km for the diesel drive.
For the electrolysis of 8.75KGH2 or 345KWHH2, 500kWh fossilescal stream, since a lack of regenerative current requires. These 500kWh cause a CO2 emission of 500 × 1,23kGCO2 / KWh are 616KGCO2. (1,23KGCO2 / KWH is the Fossilmix 2019 FRG *)
Conclusion, as long as the lack of CO2-free electrical energy exists, is the H2 based CO2-free BKW and heavy traffic on the road like rail a lie! The same applies to green hydrogen and power-to-liquid.

    * Lt. Electricity report.DE were from e-economy 2019 254mil.T CO2 emits, with a conventional production of 277TWh minus 71TH atom results in 206TWH Fossil results in a fossil mix 1.233kg CO2 / kWh.
